Centered on our call to uphold the dignity of every human person— especially refugees and immigrants in our community—we invite you to participate in the 2026 Lenten Project in support of City of Refuge.

Since 2010, City of Refuge has worked tirelessly to serve and empower refugees (and other newcomers) as they navigate a new life in mid-Missouri, providing wraparound services such as relational care, education, and development. To ensure City of Refuge can continue this critical work in Columbia amid federal funding cuts, we are asking parishioners to contribute $10,000 towards their fundraising campaign.

All contributions should be made directly to CITY OF REFUGE (include "Newman Lenten Project" only as a note/memo). Cash/checks for City of Refuge may be placed in the drop box in the Gathering Space; contributions will be collected weekly.

This Lent, join the Service & Justice Team and Social Justice Committee for a 4-week book study of "The Ungrateful Refugee" by Dina Nayeri. Through personal experience and collective story-sharing, this book challenges common perceptions about refugees and invites deeper reflection on human dignity, displacement, and belonging. 

Study options include Weekday Evening (student only) Group, Weekend Evening Group, Weekday Morning Group, or a Self-Paced Study. Registration is required.

City of Refuge Basic Needs Supply List (Amazon Wishlist)

As part of the Lenten Project for City of Refuge, we are collecting home/hygiene items for their Basic Needs Closet during the monthly personal care collection for February and March. Place requested items in the designated collection bin inside the doors facing Turner Avenue or donate directly via their Amazon Wishlist (linked below).

Current Needs (ONLY DONATE REQUESTED ITEMS): body wash, body lotion, dish soap, feminine hygiene products (pads), household cleaning spray, paper towels, and other items on the City of Refuge Basic Needs Supply List (Amazon Wishlist).

The Our Lady of Lourdes St. Vincent de Paul (SVDP) Conference here in Columbia is a tri-parish collaboration of volunteers with a heart for the poor. When responding to requests, Vincentians offer both spiritual and physical support by returning helpline calls, teaming up to conduct home visits, and praying together. 

If you have a passion for direct service and feel called to be the hands and feet of Christ to those in most need, this opportunity is a wonderful way to get involved...for now or for a lifetime. Initiation and orientation are provided by the local SVDP Conference, but Vincentian membership status can be maintained where ever God leads you. The Interfaith Garden was started in 2009 by Newman Parish and Congregation Beth Shalom as a hands-on way to practice Care for God's Creation. The garden raises organically grown produce for The Food Bank Market, supporting the nutritional needs of low-income community members in the Columbia area. 

The Interfaith Garden welcomes people of all faiths and skill levels (including children under the supervision of their parent/guardian)with a passion for working with their hands to involved in this opportunity! Because volunteers assist with nearly every part of the gardening process, physical stamina for hands-on-help, heavy-lifting, and moving supplies/equipment is recommended.
