Episode 32 - Priyank Jaiswal
Episode 32 - Priyank Jaiswal
In 2014, IODP Expedition 353 encountered an interesting situation. The scientific research vessel JOIDES Resolution arrived at India’s Exclusive Economic Zone, but the permission to drill into the Indian waters had not come through yet. The JR, along with the scientists and crew on board were at the door, but had to wait for the gates to open. For this episode, Priyank Jaiswal who sailed on Expedition 353 and shares how on board the JR, everyone did everything they could to occupy themselves while waiting for the approval to drill. The experience made him appreciate things that must happen behind the scenes to make drilling possible. Conversation recorded October 3, 2024. Episode 17 - Ashley Burkett and Allie Tessin
Episode 17 - Ashley Burkett and Allie Tessin
If you are curious to learn more about the bonding and friendships that develop while at sea, listen no further than this conversation with Allyson Tessin and Ashley Burkett, two scientists that sailed on Expedition 392 (Agulhas Plateau Cretaceous Climate, Feb-April 2022). After living in a socially-isolated world and having their expedition delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Allie and Ashley became instant friends once they boarded JOIDES Resolution. Starting with a conversation over who would shower first in their shared bathroom, their friendship has led to expanded science collaborations, a wedding invitation, and so much more. This conversation was recorded November 17, 2023.
Episode 61 - Kaitlin Schaible
Episode 61 - Kaitlin Schaible
Food, fun, and faculty mentors… all of these were a part of the experience Kaitlin Schaible had while sailing on board Chikyu for Expedition 405. Here, Kaitlin speaks about about dietary restrictions, watching television-worthy ping pong matches between scientists and the crew, and most importantly, how she views the IODP framework as successful in addressing really challenging big questions through expeditions and international collaborations. This conversation was recorded October 27, 2025. Photo provided by K. Schaible.
Episode 53 - Carl Brenner
Episode 53 - Carl Brenner
“The breadth of the science that is done in this program is pretty exciting and you don't have to be a trained marine geologist to appreciate that.” This quote comes from Carl Brenner, the director of the U.S. Science Support Program of the recently concluded International Ocean Discovery Program. For this episode of Tales from the Deep, Carl brings us on his journey from a music major in college to USSSP Director. His narrative also reminds us that one does not need to have sailed on a drilling vessel such as JOIDES Resolution to participate and even serve in a leadership role in the scientific ocean drilling community. This conversation was recorded August 19, 2025. Photo provided by C. Brenner.
Episode 4 - Yi Wang
Episode 4 - Yi Wang
What is it like to celebrate your birthday on a scientific research vessel in the middle of the ocean? Yi Wang describes her birthday celebration while on board JOIDES Resolution for Expedition 390, combining community and culture in a COVID-safe environment for an extra-special day. Quote from Yi: "It was so exciting because I could actually share the beef noodles and soup with all the people I know on board, and also tell them the story of the longevity noodle. That was amazing." (Photo Credit: Sandra Herrmann, IODP JRSO) [Photo ID: 151_ exp390_1087.jpg]

Episode 60 - Natalia Varela
Episode 60 - Natalia Varela
Sedimentologist Natalia Varela joined JOIDES Resolution - to collect data in the paleomagnetics laboratory. Take a listen to hear Natalia discuss her application process to join a JR science party during COVID, what it was like to prepare for paleomag on board with the support of her incredible mentors, and some reflections about the impacts on early career scientists such as herself, now that JOIDES Resolution is no longer sailing. This conversation was recorded November 19, 2025. Photo from MerlinOne database, taken by Sandra Herrmann (IODP JRSO, exp396_191).
Episode 59 - Rachael Gray
Episode 59 - Rachael Gray
Ocean biogeochemist Rachael Gray has sailed on JOIDES Resolution as both a laboratory technician and as a part of the science party for Expedition 400. So how has Rachael navigated her journey through scientific ocean drilling? Rachel discusses working alongside legends, having a growth mindset, and the value of just sitting around and telling stories. Conversation recorded November 12, 2025. Photo provided by R. Gray.
Episode 57 - Chris Jones
Episode 57 - Chris Jones
Marine geochemist Christopher Jones has lots of food stories from his time on JOIDES Resolution, ranging from chocolate oranges to Cheez-Its. But he also has stories about working with fellow scientists and connections to coastal communities. For this episode of Tales from the Deep, Chris speaks about his time on IODP Expedition 398 and how his time at sea expanded his interest in the intersections of society and human history, with geology and geologic history. You will also learn how his wish for someone to throw him bananas and the announcement "core on deck" factored into his time at sea. Conversation recorded September 3, 2025. Photo provided by C. Jones.

The scientific drilling vessel Glomar Challenger began collecting deep-sea core samples in 1968, with JOIDES Resolution in 1985 and Chikyu in 2005 continuing to investigate and expand our knowledge of marine geology and geophysics. Those who have sailed on these ships and mission-specific platforms, and supported the many off- and onshore missions, share stories about their personal and professional experiences with scientific ocean drilling.
