About Ryan
Ryan John Ellis is a WRoCAH (AHRC) funded PhD student at the University of York. In collaboration with The Royal Air Force Museum, his research investigates the heritage significance of former RAF Changi.
Through archival research, fieldwork, and oral histories, it explores contested narratives around militarism, colonial legacy, and memory to inform heritage practices and museum representation.
Passionate about safeguarding and promoting Cold War history and heritage, Ryan currently serves as Vice Chair of the Cold War Network. He is also a member of the Youth Advisory Board at the National Museum of the Royal Navy.
Previously, he captured more than 250 hours of oral history testimony as the Head of Storytelling at the Royal Signals Museum. In 2024, in recognition of this output, he featured on the inaugural BBC History Extra 30 under 30 list.
