We Are Alive.

Korea has had a history of foreign invasion, colonial rule, and division of the two Koreas. For this reason, the government tried to preserve our history by creating a framework of tangible and intangible cultural properties to protect tradition. However, living in a modern society where times have passed and traditions have just become "traditions," I wanted to introduce the beautiful folk culture of my home country as that of this era. Many traditional cultural heritages in Korea are currently enshrined in museum glass halls, but I think they can only be alive if they are also used by living people and moved from mouth to mouth. Culture as a burial object or relic buried in the soil has value as a "classic," but the original meaning has already been lost. The project that started with that idea is We Are Alive. In this era when you can travel around the world with one finger, I wanted to digitize Korean things and carefully hug them to many people. Our performing arts that we watched regardless of status, customs paintings hung in doors and rooms to defeat demons and diseases, and ornaments hung on clothes hoping for luck, success, and health. The ancestors naturally enjoyed culture as art, culture, leisure, and talisman in their daily lives. Therefore, I hope that we who live in the present will also enjoy the folk culture that our ancestors enjoyed. The way to preserve, sustain, and create traditions cannot be so strong that the belief that living people should breathe in. We are going to start the We are alive collection to introduce Korean culture to many people and everyone enjoys it together. 


The first mask that I want to introduce to you is "We are alive" Series 1.
It is Hahoe Mask of Yangju Byeolsandae Nori and Songpa Sandae Nori.

Hahoe Mask is one of the most well-known masks in Korea. It is designated as a national treasure of Korea, and all general masks are burned after play, while Hahoe masks have been preserved not only by building and preserving houses for storing masks in villages, but also by taboo stories related to them.

This mask was used for Byeolsingutnori, which is held on the fifteenth day of the New Year every year, and he spoke freely wearing a mask of bitter criticism and satire that he could not normally speak of. These masks were made of alder and painted, and their jaws were made separately and attached with string so that they could move vividly during play. In particular, Yangban and Baekjeong show a sophisticated three-dimensional effect, drawing attention.


#1 하회 양반탈 (Yang Ban)


각시라는 탈은 하회 마을 별신굿에서 놀던 탈입니다. 각시는 남자 배우의 어깨에 올라 무등을 타거나, 누군가의 마누라로 살아갈테다. 독립적인 무대를 가지고 있지 못하다. 입이 뚫려있지 않아서 말도 없다. 그 부분이 개인적으로 안타까웠다. 고운 얼굴하고 흰 분칠까지 한 듯 새하얀 달걀형 얼굴에 이쁘게 머리까지 가채로 따 올렸는데, 이 어여쁜 각시를 누가 사랑하지 않을 수 있겠는가?

The mask called Gaksi is a mask that was played at Byeolsingut in Hahoe Village. Gakshi will ride on the shoulder of a male actor or live as someone's wife. have no independent stage The mask is not open-mouthed, so there is no word. That part was personally unfortunate. She has a white, egg-shaped face, finely powdered, and beautifully plucked her hair up, and who can't love this pretty Gakshi?

#2 각시탈 (Ghack Si)

?솔직함과 자존감이 매력인 남자, 취발이
취발이는 사람의 모습을 하고 있지만, 귀신을 쫓고 부정을 물리치는 상징적인 역할 뿐 아니라 악가무의 무기를 가지고 있다는 것이다. 만능 엔터테이너처럼 느껴진다. 사실 허세 가득한 노승보다 솔직하고 다재다능한 취발이 훨씬 매력있다고 생각했다.

?주인공은 아니지만 자신의 삶에 당당한 인간, 취발이는 현 시대에 데려와도 위풍 당당한 자태를 유지할 것이라 생각한다. 녹록치 않은 세상을 살아가면서도 자존감과 기량, 열정을 놓치지 않는 그의 존재가 오늘 나에게는 내 몸 안에 숨겨진 또 다른 내면을 깨우는 열쇠가 되어주길 바란다.


? Honesty and crazy self-esteem are attractive 
Chui Bal is seen as a mask in which the appearance characteristics are relatively similar even among the mask plays that exist in each region. What's unique is that it takes the form of a normal person, but it has weapons as a symbolic role in chasing ghosts and defeating injustice.  Should I say that I'm an all-around entertainer?

In fact, Chui Bal, who won enthusiastic love from a bunch of bluffers with his own charm and confidence, came to me more attractive than other old monks. 

He's not the main character, but I felt that he had an aura that was no less than that. I think Chwibal's confidence, confidence, and firmness in living his life are really attractive human beings even if we put the present next to us.

#4 취발이 (Chui Bal)

열애

영원히 타오르는 불꽃은 없다는 걸 알면서도 
우리의 꽃은 영원히 피어있으리라 생각했지
우리의 사랑은 그렇게 시작되었어 

Passionate Love

You know that there's no flame that burns forever. 
I wanted our flowers to bloom forever. 
That's how our relationship began.


열애에 나오는 탈은 두 가지 입니다.
여자가 쓴 것은 각시탈, 남성이 쓴 것은 먹중탈입니다. 
먹중은 파계승으로 본디 여덟명이 같이 다니는데 소무(극중 여자 주인공)를 탐내하는 노승을 꾸짖으며 소무를 데리고 춤을 추며 놀다가 석가에게 걸려 사자에게 혼쭐이 난 채 퇴장당하는 인물입니다. 

본래 탈춤에서 여자 캐릭터들은 말이 거의 없습니다. 저는 이 부분이  항상 안타까웠습니다. 당시 사회상 여자 캐릭터는 턱관절도 분리되어 있지 않았거니와 미얄할미를 제외하고 젊은 여자들은 대사 대신 춤사위 혹은 몸동작으로 의미를 전달했기 때문입니다. 그래서 이제는 그런 옛날 굴레의 탈춤 대본에서 벗어나게 해 주고 싶었습니다. 

그 출발은 사랑을 먼저 경험하게 해주고 싶었습니다. 그래서 자유분방하며 탈춤 7과장(탈춤의 놀음 단계, 서양에서의 악장과 같은 역할) 모두 등장하며 소무를 지켜봤을 팔먹중 중 한명을 데려오고 싶었고, 진심으로 소무에게 반한 한 먹중이 그녀 보다 낮은 위치에서 올려다 보며 사랑스러워 하는 모습을 담고 싶었습니다. 

어느 연인들이나 그러하듯 사랑의 출발선에 서게 된 두 사람은 벚꽃 한잎 떨어지는 것 조차 아쉬워 하지요? 그런 사랑의 초입부 부분을 담고 싶었습니다. 
그러나 '오래오래 행복하게 살았습니다'로 마무리 짓고 싶진 않았습니다. 이 연인이 어떠한 사랑을 해 나아갈지는 모르겠지만, 현실적인 이유로 헤어진 뒤 열렬히 사랑했던 그 순간을 회상하는 순간을 떠올려 보았습니다. 그 때 나온 문장이 바로 다음의 문장입니다.

우리와 똑같이 사랑을 하고 이별을 하는 젊은 연인의 모습 속에서 발견 한 것은 
영원히 살고 싶어하는 인간의 본성과 끝나지 않는 사랑을 하고 싶다는 
인간의 헛된 욕망이 제게는 똑같이 녹고 있는 얼음 두 개 처럼 보였습니다.

  두 어린 연인이 사랑을 시작하는데 지기에는 조금 무거운 짐을 준 것 같기도 합니다만, 부디 보시는 분들께서는 사랑을 시작하는 연인의 애틋함과 열렬함, 그리고 그 순간을 추억하는 성숙한 두 연인을 떠올려주시기를 바라며 이만 작품 소개를 마치도록 하겠습니다.

There are two kinds of masks in dating.
What woman wear is Gak-Si, and what man wear is Muk-Jung. 
Mukjung is a young monk, and eight people go together, and while scolding the old monk who covets Somu (the female protagonist in the play), he was caught by a Buddha and was kicked out by a lion. 

In the original mask dance, female characters rarely talk. I've always felt sorry for this part. At that time, female characters were not separated from their jaw joints in society, and except for Miyal Halmi, young women conveyed their meaning by dancing or body movements instead of lines. So I wanted to let him get away from the old mask dance script. 

I wanted to let you experience love first. So I wanted to bring in one of the eight men who would have watched Somu in the free-spirited, mask dance chapter seven (the stage of mask dance, the role of movement in the West), and I wanted to show that a Muk-jung, who was truly in love with Somu, looked up from a lower position than her. 

Like any couple, the two who are at the starting line of love are even sad to see a cherry blossom fall, right? I wanted to include the beginning of love. 
But I didn't want to end it with "I lived a long, happy life." I don't know what kind of love this lover will make, but I recalled the moment when I remembered the moment I loved passionately after breaking up for practical reasons. The sentence that came out at that time is the next sentence.

What we found in the scene of a young couple who are in love and breaking up just like us is 
It's the nature of human beings who want to live forever, and it's the love that never ends 
Human vain desires seemed to me to be two ice cubes that were equally melting.

  I think it's a little heavy for two young lovers to start their love, but I hope that the viewers will remember the affection and enthusiasm of the lovers who start their love, and the mature lovers who reminisce about that moment.

#6 WHAE JANG 
#왜장녀 

빨간 봇짐 뒤로 메고 애사당을 데리고 길을 나선다.
오늘은 어떤 남정네가 날 찾으려나? 
놀아보고 싶거든 엽전부터 보이라지. 

몸집이 크고 거침없는 행동을 보여주는 여성 탈이다. 
양주별산대놀이와 송파산대놀이, 퇴계원산대놀이에 등장한다.

저고리 밑으로 배가 훤히 보이고 출렁거리는 뱃살과 엉덩이를 좌우로 넘실넘실 흔들며 걷는 모습에 웃음이 난다. 
등장시간은 짧지만, 머리에 빨간 띠장식을 한 것이 특징이고, 
등 뒤로 봇짐을 메고 있다. 능글맞은 표정을 띄고 있다.  

왜장녀는 먹중에게 돈을 받고 
애사당(악가무를 잘하는 어린 여자아이)으로하여금 재주를 보여주며 먹중과 한판 놀아주게끔 연결시켜준다.

 It is a woman's mask that shows large and outspoken behavior. It appears in Yangju Byeolsandaenori, Songpa Sandaenori, and Toegye Wonsandaenori. 

The audience laughs when they see the actor's belly clearly under the top, and when they walk with his fluttering belly and hips swaying from side to side. 

Although the appearance time is short, it is characterized by a red band decoration on the head, and it carries a bundle behind the back. She has a sly smile. 

 She gets paid by a male actor and connects Ae-Sa-Dhang (a young girl who has a talent for dance) to spend time with him.

#6 왜장녀 (Whae Jang Nyo )

봉산탈춤 X 첫째 양반 

봉산 탈춤은 해서, 즉 황해도 전 지역에 걸쳐 분포되어 온 해서 탈춤 가운데 가장 잘 알려진 탈놀이이다. 
주로 황해도 지방의 큰 명절인 단오에 놀았으며, 탈판은 단오놀이의 씨름과 여자들의 그네타기에 사용되다가 밤에는 장작불을 피워놓고 밤새도록 탈놀이를 하였다고 한다. 

봉산탈춤 역시, 벽사의 의식무, 파계승에 대한 풍자, 양반에 대한 모욕, 남녀의 대립과 갈등, 서민 생활의 실상을 모두 담고 있다.
