Soy is sneaky

Soy is really sneaky! There are lots of vegetable derivatives that don't have to tell you where they came from AND the FDA doesn't see refined soybean oil and associated products as an allergen (but I still have a reaction). Because of this, lots of ingredient labels will have soy in them but will NOT include soy in the allergy statement.

So please read the whole ingredients list every time! if you see any of the following WITHOUT a safe origin (like "from sunflower" or "from canola") THEY ARE NOT SAFE.

- Lecithin/Emulsifier 
- Vegetable Oil
- Tocopheryl Acetate/Vitamin E

Reading the label

Even if there's no good reason there should be an allergen in something, please still read the label! I've had soy in bread, chocolate, shampoo, and medication.

STEP 1: Read the Allergy Statement at the end FIRST. If it contains an allergen, stop. Mo cannot eat.

STEP 2: Then, read the Ingredients List. If it contains an allergen, stop. Mo cannot eat.

STEP 3: If the product has a MAY CONTAIN statement that does NOT include soy, it is safe. Mo can eat!

Cross contamination?

If you cook with a lot of soy/generic vegetable oil usually, reach out to me to borrow pots and pans! Otherwise, please just make sure to wash whatever you'll cook with in a dishwasher on high heat before starting.

Ingredients: 
Do you double dip with ingredients sometimes? Like, ever used the same measuring cup, once in flour and once in chocolate chips? That can leave trace amounts of flour on the chocolate chips and cause cross-contamination. If you're not sure, sometimes it's best to get a new, small bag of whatever ingredient you need (or better yet, borrow what you need from me!!).

Egg alternatives?

Flax (good binder): 
Mix 1 tbsp ground flaxseed + 2.5 tbsp water and let sit for ~10mins = 1 egg

Chia (good binder): 
Mix 1 tbsp chia + 2.5 tbsp water and let sit for ~20 mins = 1 egg

Aquafaba (good emulsifier/foaming agent): 
1tbsp = 1 yolk
2tbsp = 1 egg white
3tbsp = an entire egg

I can only have their vanilla flavor of vegan ice cream. I like to get it in a milkshake format. Letting them know that I have an allergy ahead of time and asking if they can do an extra wipe down of the machine is helpful!
