Syilx Cultural Access in the Okanagan River Basin Under Climate Change

My PhD research contributes to a place-based revitalization of Indigenous eco-cultural practices related to river stewardship, with the goal of strengthening climate resilience among First Nations in Canada.

One component of this work is the development of a systematic map of Indigenous climate adaptation strategies across North America. This project will result in a freely accessible, searchable database designed to support communities, researchers, and policymakers.

At the heart of the research is a case study examining Syilx cultural access to and mobility along the Okanagan River in British Columbia under dam operations and climate stress. You can learn more about this study in the flyer linked above.

Research

Lisa is a PhD student at the University of Passau, Germany. Her research examines how First Nations’ eco-cultural revitalization practices linked to river stewardship strengthen their climate resilience in the Canadian Columbia River Basin. With an academic background in geography, North American Studies, and education, she is committed to decolonial environmental research and collaborative, Indigenous-centered approaches. Lisa has previously worked with Tribes in Montana and Wyoming, and she maintains a personal connection to rivers through rowing on the Inn River in her hometown. Her PhD project is funded by full scholarships from the Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes and the 'Marianne-Plehn-Programm' of the Elitenetzwerk Bayern. Lisa is also a Fellow at the Passau Young Researchers Excellence Centre (PYREC).
