Without public input, the National Park Service (NPS) and Rock Creek Park Superintendent have decided to close the Malcolm X Park upper-level lawn panels from 3/23/2026 to mid-June for a planned grass restoration project. This space is one of DC’s most important community gathering areas. The Park’s lower level lawns are already closed to public access as a result of underway renovations to the fountains. Following pushback, NPS adjusted the projected closure of the park from September to mid-June. We are calling on NPS to maintain a commitment to timelines to a timely reopening of the park, and transparency with the community. The National Park Service plans to close the upper lawn at Malcolm X Park from March 23rd through early September, removing one of DC's most important community gathering spaces for the entire warm season. While we support restoring the park, we believe it doesn't have to mean losing complete access. We've created a petition urging NPS to consider phased restoration or partial access so our community can still use this vital space this spring and summer. This Saturday, join us for a park party to show the world how much this place means to us and to help us spread the word. Bring friends, blankets, instruments, food, art, whatever makes your park experience special, and come ready to help us gather signatures and build momentum.
