Sky Patrol: New Momentum in Madagascar’s Fight Against IUU Fishing by GRID-Arendal - GRID-Arendal News
Sky Patrol: New Momentum in Madagascar’s Fight Against IUU Fishing by GRID-Arendal - GRID-Arendal News
Last spring in Antsiranana, Madagascar, drones soared over Diego Bay in an ambitious exercise that may reshape how the country monitors its seas. What began as a simple question “can low-cost drones help authorities detect and deter illegal fishing along one of the largest coastlines in the Western Indian Ocean?” has now grown into a movement. Today, the real question is no longer if this technology works, but how far we are ready to go.

Waves of Change, Phase II: Return to Lüderitz
Waves of Change, Phase II: Return to Lüderitz
After an eight-hour drive from Windhoek, Hasan and I arrived in Lüderitz and were greeted by the welcome sign we painted last year. The lines were still sharp, a traditional fisherman pulling a boat rope next to the words “we are all pulling in the same direction”. No graffiti. No damage. The town had looked after it.This was my third trip to Namibia, I was proud to see what we had started last year through the “Waves of Change” campaign, a community-powered project that’s turning the walls of Lüderitz into massive works of ocean-inspired art. This time, we spent eight days in Lüderitz. This time I was able to get more involved with the painting, helping Hasan on the big pieces. We worked using Hasan’s pre-cut stencils and a spray gun, hastily taping pieces up against the Lüderitz wind and painting between gusts. The community members that had been trained last year during Phase I were also working on painting across the town, so we could focus on the more complex murals.

By Olivia RempelAs a videographer at GRID-Arendal, I’m always looking for stories. I’m especially looking for stories that go beyond the high-level theory of how to tackle climate change and environmental problems, and instead give me a chance to talk to people who are actively trying to change things on the ground. Alongside my Dakar-based GRID-Arendal colleague, Richard Dacosta, I recently spent two weeks in West Africa, documenting marine conservation efforts in Guinea-Bissau and Senegal through photos and videos, and it was an eye-opening experience that reinforced just how deeply connected communities are to their marine environment.

Environmental Impact of the Conflict in Gaza
Environmental Impact of the Conflict in Gaza
This Preliminary Assessment was prepared by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in response to an official request from the State of Palestine to assess the environmental impacts of the conflict in the Gaza Strip. The Preliminary Assessment provides a summary of what is known about the environmental impacts of the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip, including impacts on environmental management and waste disposal systems; energy, fuel and associated infrastructure; destruction of buildings and conflict-related debris; marine and terrestrial environments; and air quality. In addition to describing known, and in many cases visible, environmental impacts, this assessment highl...
