Introduction Endurance running places significant demands on the respiratory system. While breathing is automatic, how we breathe can influence running performance and efficiency. At peak effort (VO₂max), the muscles of respiration themselves can consume a significant portion of total oxygen uptake. Inefficient breathing mechanics may therefore sap energy and limit oxygen delivery to working muscles.
