JOSPT Blog - Words Can Be Harmful: A Personal Perspective
Specific words and phrases can impact our patients' well-being. This creates negative perceptions of their own recovery and future health care encounters. We need to recognize that the patient's perspective on what they are experiencing is different from our own. Patients may be experiencing situations that influence their ability to receive health-related messages. Factors including mental health status, health literacy, socioeconomic hardships, and contextual influences are all elements we need to consider when discussing diagnosis and prognosis. Including the patient's perspective allows the clinician to understand how patients perceive their condition and current experience.

After sustaining an injury or experiencing prolonged pain, one might seek assessment by a licensed medical professional. Upon arrival, the individual likely goes through a physical exam and battery of tests to determine a diagnosis, prognosis, and plan of care. The information collected allows the healthcare professional to develop an appropriate plan of care that will address the individual’s impairments and functional limitations. One of these possible objective measures is grip strength testing. Grip strength testing is easy to perform but may not be as commonly used during the physical examination.
