UPDATE ON HAITIAN EARTHQUAKE RELIEF (1/3): Look for resources that donate directly to Haitian people, NOT international relief organizations - oftentimes, the money doesn't arrive directly to Haitians!!!
(2/3, same link): Read this ProPublic article on the Red Cross and Haiti - you *shouldn't* donate to them
(3/3, same link): Check any org's financials before donating, overhead costs should be low (they're what it costs to manage the org, but this money doesn't actually go to relief efforts)
