The twist, the pull, the force it takes to keep yourself together. The ways you beautifully unravel and put yourself back. The core of your being exposed, raw, breathing. Everyone pulling a thread of you to feed their need, their want to feel right, righteous, safe, validated, seen, sharp. But you are made of more than flesh, of more than shadow and light. You are more than what others make of you, or need you to be. You are solid, strong, defined, in ways that they might not see, but still exist. You hold yourself, your shape, your form, your outline, even while they pull at you. You exist, beyond what they define, and they exist, beyond what you define.
You exist beyond.

Little did you know you were made of fire. You made yourself small to make a man feel taller. You made yourself quiet to allow him room to feel heard. You were told to be dumber so that you’d be more lovable. To find someone when you were alone because just being is not enough for you to matter. To play dirty and keep someone by any means because in their heads you were nothing without their definition of a woman. Quiet makes you lovable. Dumber women keep their husbands for longer. Have a child to hold him by your side.

Everywhere “him”, suffocating your very essence. Taking the air away, even just by being there. Sacrifice everything for this “him”, make yourself valuable, dependable, small, mysterious, play games to keep his interest, make him feel good about himself. And then, when you’re small and pummeled into a tight mass of twisted pain within yourself, he says “you make me feel like a man.” Because even his confidence is based on your reactions.

Little did you know you had this much power. Power to stand tall, to be a bitch, to be loud and insufferable, to tell them to fuck off. To be alone. That one wonderful thing, of not feeling despair when you are alone in the evening, when “he” doesn’t call you and you still live, even enjoy. When a man is not the goal. Power to walk away and say no. Power to say exactly what you want and see the ones that are scared for just what they are - not someone to please and none of your damn business. Power to be. To think. Little did you know that you were made of fire and you cast light around you. You couldn’t have hidden in someone’s shadow.

Fire

For perseverance. For shooting out of the snow each time, to braze the cold. For showing what comes next.
We can do more than what we assume. We can be more than we tell ourselves.
