Take a Hike: Hiking the Trails of the Indiana Dunes
Sunset at Indiana Dunes State ParkWe typically hold out for fall, winter and spring hikes, leaving the summertime to the ticks, tourists and full parking lots. On a crisp fall day, when you reach the top of the 270ish steps at West Beach and see the Chicago skyline across the lake you'll be impressed (with the view AND yourself)! And when you catch a perfect sunset on the lakefront - you'll be posting at least a thousand pics to tr
What I've Been Reading Summer '24 Edition
What I've Been Reading Summer '24 Edition
My summer reading habits are always a bit on the lighter side with mysteries, quick reads that don't take much focus, and audiobooks, so my list of recommended books today will be short. The good part is that the books that were well-written really stood out! (Like after you come home from a vacation where you ate everything in sight, and then you have that first home cooked meal with protein in it. Same feeling basically.) So let's skip the gas station snacks and get right to the meat and potat

Theology Thursday: Prayer Wrap Up
Theology Thursday: Prayer Wrap Up
Hey, Hey, It's Theology Thursday! I have plans for the fall as to what topic I'll be digging into, but today is wrap up day: This summer I explored the topic of prayer. Here are my top takeaways: -The two books I enjoyed the most on the topic were one I discussed in full here: When God is Silent and another one that kind of surprised me, to be honest. It's a book called Praying With Paul by D.A. Carson. I found this book to be so encouraging, so well-written (at times, he made me laugh out loud)

5 Favorite Chicago Foods & Places (i'm guessing you haven't tried!)
If I could do it all over again, I would love to be a travel agent or tour guide, as I love to find little hidden places or unique spots to visit. I've never passed a road I didn't want to drive down! And having gone to college in downtown Chicago, visiting the city many, many times over the years, having a husband who works there...all these add up to me being quite familiar with the city and having developed my favorite spots to stop. I'll skip over the museums (go - they're great) and the tra

5 Tips for How To Read Through the Bible
5 Tips for How To Read Through the Bible
A verse pulled completely out of context promising wealth and health if only the person would pray "right." A talk on how questioning the current prophet means you are questioning the Lord (and how sinful that is). A video on a cult that developed out of a misuse of Scripture. A closeup selfie with a caption completely bashing the faith of his youth based on his experience (not on what is actually in the Scriptures), like after like ticking underneath. All easily found on my phone this morning.

{Book Review} When God is Silent: Let the Bible Teach You to Pray by John Koessler
This summer I've been studying prayer, so I've been writing about it, looking at prayers in the Bible, doing word studies and reading books on the subject. I'd say I'm analyzing prayer, but that sounds like I think I'm the pro and just need to give prayer some coaching tips on How To Be A Better Team Player. In reality, I mean nothing of the sort and rather am approaching it as one who's grown a bit discouraged around the edges, but has hope and faith in the sovereignty of God. Maybe I think if

{TryDay} How Ultramarathons Changed a Pastor’s Life
It's TryDay - which, in this B Side world, means it's time to share a story to hopefully inspire you to try something new. I'd like to introduce you to my friend Mark who decided -on his B Side of life - to pursue ultramarathons. Actually, he didn't start out pursuing 100 mile runs...but I'll let him share that story. Although Mark and I have never met in person, we've been friends for about 10...12? years via Facebook because of a mutual interest in books, the Midwest, and theology (and a good

5 Ways NOT to Be a Help to a Friend In Need
Whether we've faced it with family, friends or acquaintances, we've all been in situations where we've wondered how we can best help. And possibly you've been in the position of being the one that needed the support. Either way, through my own experience and talking with others, I've learned over the years about helping friends who are going through tough times. Let's start with the negative - always the best place to start on a sunny summer day, right? Here are 5 ways NOT to be a help: -Advice
