Meet winterfat (Krascheninnikovia lanata)—a tough, native subshrub that thrives on dry, open slopes from 4,000 to 9,500 feet, including places like Rabbit Mountain.

A a hardy native wildflower found across Boulder County’s dry, open spaces. Its sticky, resin-filled cups give the plant its name and may help retain moisture or deter herbivores. With bright yellow blooms from June to October, it provides vital late-season food for pollinators. Historically valued by Indigenous peoples and herbalists for its medicinal properties, this aromatic plant thrives in tough conditions—bringing color, resilience, and ecological benefit to even the harshest landscapes.
