WATCH THE RECORDING: Toward Brain-Based Prediction of Recovery: How Neuroimaging Can Help Combat the Substance-Use Epidemic
Translation of research findings to the clinic remains a primary challenge of modern psychiatry. One way is via machine-learning approaches. When combined with network neuroscience, machine learning further allows for assessment of systems-level brain processes in an unbiased manner. This talk will present recent work demonstrating the utility of this approach to identify specific brain networks that predict individual differences in complex addiction outcomes, including opioid and cocaine use-risk in adults and alcohol use-risk in youth.
How Immune Activation May Alter the Brain and Cause Depression-Related Behavior During Chronic Social Stress
How Immune Activation May Alter the Brain and Cause Depression-Related Behavior During Chronic Social Stress
Extensive research over several decades, some of it led by investigators supported by BBRF, has demonstrated that stress, including psychosocial stress (stress that arises from social interactions) is one of the most important risk factors for depression. Great effort has therefore been devoted to research seeking to reveal precisely how stress perturbs the biology of the brain and other bodily systems to produce the diverse range of depression symptoms.

WATCH THE RECORDING: Detection of Suicide-Related Emergencies Among Children Using Real-World Clinical Data
Suicide is a national and international public health priority, and suicidal behavior among children is common, costly, and preventable. Systematic, accurate, and equitable detection of children who present to medical care for suicidal thoughts and behaviors is challenging. In turn, suicide and self-harm prediction models and evidence-based personalized decision support tools to reduce suicide risk hold promise for prevention efforts, but are seldom adopted in clinical practice for children.

Unique Neural Activation Pattern in People With Co-Occurring Bipolar Disorder and Alcohol Use Disorder Points to Future Treatment Targets
Nearly 40% of people diagnosed with bipolar disorder (BD) are considered likely to be affected by alcohol-use disorder (AUD) over their lifetime.

New, Potential First-in-Class Schizophrenia Medicine Reduced Positive and Negative Symptoms in Phase 3 Trial
A new medicine for treating schizophrenia—one that appears to help reduce both positive and negative symptoms of the illness—has passed a first hurdle in phase 3 clinical testing. Phase 3 is often pivotal in deciding whether a medicine is effective and safe enough to obtain FDA approval.

A Connectivity Signature Predicting Response to Antipsychotic Therapy is Identified in First-Episode Psychosis Patients
In people who experience a first psychotic episode—often the prelude to schizophrenia and related disorders—the individual’s response to antipsychotic medicines can be crucial, and typically, varies considerably from patient to patient.

Gliosis, an Immune Response to Brain Injury, Is Found in Brains of Recovered COVID Patients With Lasting Depression and Cognitive Symptoms
In the weeks, months, and even years following a COVID infection, it is not uncommon for those who have recovered from the virus’s acute symptoms to be dogged by persistent depressive symptoms. Often, such depression is accompanied by cognitive symptoms; sometimes the latter can occur in the absence of depression symptoms. Researchers have been trying to get a fix on what causes these post-infection brain-based symptoms, and a new study suggests one possible source.
