Food Sovereignty in Portland, ME
We are gathering community input on a proposed Food Sovereignty Ordinance in Portland, Maine. This local law would protect the rights of residents to grow, produce, and sell certain types of food directly from their homes or properties, without state licensing or inspection requirements for low-risk food items. More than 100 municipalities across Maine have passed similar ordinances in alignment with Maine's 'Right to Food' being written into its Constitution (Constitution of Maine, Article I, Section 25) and the Maine Food Sovereignty Act, both with a goal to end hunger in the state by 2030. That said, currently, Portland does not have a Food Sovereignty Ordinance in place. This survey will help us understand how Portlanders grow and access food, and give evidence to whether there is support for passing this kind of ordinance here.
