Genomics Offers a Faster Path to Restoring the American Chestnut
Genomics Offers a Faster Path to Restoring the American Chestnut
For more than a century, the American chestnut, once a dominant tree across eastern North American forests, has been devastated by an invasive fungal disease that killed billions of trees in the early 1900s. A new study published in the journal Science shows that modern genomic tools can dramatically accelerate restoration while preserving the species’ ecological identity.

Seeing is Believing
Seeing is Believing
Beautiful Point Lookout State Park on the southernmost tip of Maryland’s Western shore may soon be underwater, but if that feels too distant to the campers, fishermen, and swimmers who visit every year, maybe a virtual tour of the place 10, 20, or 30 years from now will help them better grasp the future. That’s what students in AGNR’s Landscape Architecture (LARC) studio program were shooting for when they created a series of 360-degree 3D visualizations depicting the problem, as well as remedial infrastructure upgrades to help the park fight back against changing climate conditions.
The Nature of Nurturing
The Nature of Nurturing
Although just a freshman in AGNR’s Environmental Science and Policy program, Maryland native Esther Bonney has already had some huge moments of triumph in her life, but perhaps the biggest is starting and directing her own non profit, Nurture Natives, which provides residents with ready-to-plant trees and guidebooks for native plantings.

Can Salt Marsh Restoration Bring Back the Birds?
Can Salt Marsh Restoration Bring Back the Birds?
Throughout the world, marsh birds are in decline, with some estimates suggesting their populations are falling by 9% annually, and many species may be extinct by 2050. The primary reason is habitat loss, as the marshes they depend on for survival disappear under the pressures of sea-level rise.
