How much fluoxetine gets into the brains of teens?

Our team is led by Stephani Stancil, PhD, APRN. Dr. Stancil is a clinician scientist in the Divisions of Adolescent & Young Adult Medicine and Clinical Pharmacology, Toxicology and Therapeutic Innovation at Children's Mercy. For nearly 15 years, her clinical practice has focused on complex teens in specialized populations. Her research program defines individual differences between patients that impact how they respond to certain medications, particularly for eating disorders, anxiety, depression and substance use. Some of these differences include genetics, metabolism, development, and other biological and psychosocial factors. Her other research interest is improving reproductive health care for teens and young adults. 

Meet The Team Leader

John Tumberger is a current KU medical student and has been with our team for 3 years. He is interested in studying why some people respond to medication while others don’t. John also leads our Teen Research Advisors program. 

Michael Bartkoski has been with our team for 1 year and started medical school at KU this fall. His interest in finding ways to better equip clinicians in treating teens with psychiatric conditions is what drew him to Stancil Lab.

Mariah Brewe started with our team in late 2023 with a passion for bettering mental healthcare for teens and young adults. She is studying for a master’s in psychology and is interested in how the social world effects individual wellbeing.

Anna Burns joined the team in March 2024 and enjoys applying her knowledge of computer science to medical research. She wants to improve treatments for adolescent mental health and hopes to attend medical school in the future.
