In more ancient times, Apollo was not considered a solar Deity, but exclusively related to Health and Music, while the Chariot of the Sun was led by Helios, brother of Selene, the Moon and Eos, the Dawn.
The figure of Helios and that of Apollo begin to overlap from the fifth century BC. From that period onwards Apollo becomes Solar Deity: he is not the Sun himself (unlike Helios), but he has power over the Sun [...]

The image represents a dark sky, illuminated by dim sidereal lights: it is nothingness, emptiness and darkness, where only distant glimpses of light can be seen. Immersed in the darkness is the figure of Apollo who, heedless of the darkness that surrounds him and seems to try to swallow him, is absorbed in the creation of the Sun [...]

In epoche più antiche, Apollo non era considerato una divinità solare, ma esclusivamente legato alla Salute e alla Musica, mentre il Carro del Sole era guidato da Helios, fratello di Selene, la Luna e di Eos, l'Alba.
La figura di Helios e quella di Apollo iniziano a sovrapporsi dal V secolo Avanti Cristo. Da quel periodo in poi Apollo diventa Divinità Solare: non è il Sole egli stesso (a differenza di Helios), ma possiede potere sul Sole [...]

L'immagine rappresenta un cielo oscuro, rischiarato dalle fioche luci siderali: è il nulla, il vuoto e il buio, dove solo lontanamente si intravedono spiragli di luce. Immerso nell'oscurità c'è la figura di Apollo che, incurante del buio che lo circonda e sembra tentare di inghiottirlo, è assorto nella creazione del Sole [...]

Uccisione di Tizio (Killing Tizio)

Nell'Inno omerico dedicato a Hermes si narra di come il Messaggero degli Dei, appena nato, fuggì dalla sua culla in Arcadia e vagò fino a raggiungere dei campi dove una mandria di ovini stava pascolando. Rubò alcuni capi e li portò in una grotta dove li sventrò per usare le loro budella come corde e staccò il carapace di una tartaruga per farne una cassa di risonanza, creando un nuovo strumento musicale. Apollo, che era a guardia del pascolo, s'infuriò per il furto e rintracciato il neo-fratellastro, lo portò al cospetto di Zeus per obbligarlo a restituire il maltolto. Il viaggio di Apollo, per diventare la grande Divinità che è, inizia molto presto e si può far coincidere la sua ascesa con lo scontro fra un giovanissimo Apollo e il drago Pitone, colpevole di aver perseguitato la madre Leto per svariate terre e aver tentato di stuprarla mentre era incinta del Dio [...]

Nell'opera è rappresentato Apollo che, appena giunto ai piedi del monte Parnaso incontra Pitone nel bosco. Nonostante il Dio sia determinato e coraggioso, non può fare a meno che provare un moto di stupore nel constatare le dimensioni del drago. L'occhio inespressivo e vitreo (quasi fosse già morto) di Pitone sembra fissare lo sguardo del giovane Dio incurante della freccia che fra poco metterà fine alla sua vita [...]

[...] Pan è rappresentato senza barba, leggermente incurvato sul moribondo Apollo che accarezza dolcemente per incoraggiarlo, rendendo questa figura molto più "umana" di quanto il suo aspetto possa far pensare. Con la mano destra richiama il potere della Divinazione allo scopo di leggere il destino del giovane Dio, con lo sguardo preoccupato, ma speranzoso che Apollo possa avere ancora un futuro, possibilmente luminoso [...]
