Queen’s students and faculty left in Doha amid regional airspace shutdowns - The Queen's Jouranl
The students were returning from an overseas field course, and at the time of this publication, remain stranded in Doha after regional airspace closures disrupted flights in the wake of escalating hostilities involving Iran.In an interview with The Journal, Stephen Lougheed, Queen’s professor of biology cross-appointed to environmental studies, and the lead instructor of the field course, said the group was already on its flight from Doha to Toronto when the situation escalated.“We were maybe an hour and a half over, just entering Iranian airspace when one of my students noticed that the plane had started to turn around,” he said.

Queen’s professor Sarah Tsiang’s poem about sexual harassment’s at the heart of a national censorship debate - The Queen's Journal
What began as a Calgary-based regional poetry recitation quickly evolved into a censorship controversy that has captured national attention.Josephine Trigg, a Grade 12 student at Bishop Carroll High School—a Catholic school in Calgary—prepared to recite Queen’s Creative Writing professor, Sarah Yi-Mei Tsiang’s feminist poem “Dick Pics” for the regional Poetry in Voice competition. Despite support from the parents and her English teacher, Tyler Perry, her school administrators forbade her from performing the poem at the recitation because of the poem’s explicit language regarding penises. The Calgary Catholic school’s decision to ban the poem from the Poetry in Voice recitation has sparked conversation surrounding the importance of intellectual freedom and the rising trend of Albertan censorship that, in this case, directly correlated with Freedom to Read week on Feb. 22 to 28, which is an annual week dedicated to Canadian’s freedom of thought and expression.

The key to Canadian Arctic sovereignty is strengthening our Northern communities - The Queen's Journal
The key to Canadian Arctic sovereignty is strengthening our Northern communities - The Queen's Journal
Protecting Canada’s Arctic won’t come from weapons alone.Canada’s Arctic sovereignty is under renewed pressure, with China deploying surveillance vessels into Arctic waters, Russia intensifying its military presence in the circumpolar North, and the United States threatening the annexation of both Canada and Greenland. The path to protecting Canada’s Arctic sovereignty isn’t through military might or muscle, it’s by strengthening connections with the people who already live there. It’s becoming clear that the Canadian Arctic is no longer a distant frontier that the federal government can ignore. Instead, it’s a competitive arena Canada must defend from foreign powers wanting to lay claim to its abundant resources and critical minerals.
Ford’s increase in funding presents new barriers to higher education - The Queen's Journal
Ford’s increase in funding presents new barriers to higher education - The Queen's Journal
No student should start their degree with the promise of grant funding only to have it restructured as a loan.On Feb. 12, the provincial government announced it would be lifting the tuition freeze and allocating $6.4 billion in extra funding towards universities. While lifting the tuition freeze was necessary to support universities struggling financially, it came with a reduction in grants available through the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP). Considering university is likely to become more expensive without the tuition freeze, reworking OSAP risks making a university education elitist and increasingly inaccessible to lower-income students.OSAP already isn’t sufficient enough to cover the cost of university education, and is now being cut even more.

Human trafficking isn’t an ‘elsewhere’ problem, it’s happening right here in Kingston - The Queen's Journal
Human trafficking isn’t an ‘elsewhere’ problem, it’s happening right here in Kingston - The Queen's Journal
This article discusses sexual assault and may be triggering for some readers. Local service providers say that human trafficking cases in Kingston are on the rise. Fortunately, there are ways to take action. If you had a friend who started pulling away from you, stopped coming to your hangouts, and started spending all their time with a boy you don’t even know, how would you handle it; Would you feel upset? Offended? We might not consider the possibility that our friend could be in danger, and sex trafficking might be the last thing that comes to mind. Recognizing that these are signs of human trafficking, which is happening more than we think, is crucial to keeping our loved ones safe.

KCFF screens two sold-out showings of ‘Nirvanna: The Band- the Show- the Movie’- The Queen's Journal
I laughed. I cried. I felt compelled to try the CN Tower’s EdgeWalk.Of course, I’m describing the surreal experience that’s viewing Nirvanna: The Band- the Show- the Movie as part of the Kingston Canadian Film Festival (KCFF) on Feb. 27. The Screening Room was packed with audience members of all ages, one of the film’s two sold-out showings bolstered by Nirvanna’s word-of-mouth success since its Canadian wide release on Feb. 13.Let’s rewind a bit, if you know, you know, to set up the film, directed by Matt Johnson and starring him and Jay McCarrol as themselves. Nirvanna (the movie) is based on Nirvanna the Band the Show, a mockumentary web series (turned television series). The show also stars Johnson and McCarrol as two bumbling musicians attempting to achieve their lifelong dream of playing a show at The Rivoli venue in Toronto.

Women’s Hockey season ends in Game three heartbreak - The Queen's Journal
An intense best-of-three third game ends a highly promising playoff run for the Gaels. The Queen’s Women’s hockey team hosted the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks on March 1 at the Memorial Centre in a do-or-die game three in the OUA Quarterfinals. The road team has been the prevailing one in the series going into the final game. The Gaels were hoping to reverse that trend on the late Sunday start. The Gaels came out roaring, heavily dictating the play throughout the first period, outshooting the Ridgebacks 11 to 5. Queen’s was determined to put a high volume of shots toward the net, but nothing to show for it in the first.

Men’s Hockey off to semi-finals after sweeping number one-ranked Concordia - The Queen's Journal
Queen’s sweeps their way into the semis after taking down both Montreal universities. On Feb. 25 and 27, the Queen’s Men’s hockey team took on the number-one-ranked team in the country, Concordia Stingers, in the quarterfinals, after upsetting the McGill Redbirds in the first round of the OUA playoffs. A best-of-three series, which started on the road and then had two subsequent games at the Memorial Centre.Game one was a tight, spirited playoff-style game, filled with hard defence and tough contact as every inch was earned on both sides of the ice. Emotions were only brewing as the game grew, and after the whistle, scrums became commonplace. With the period coming to an end, it looked like it would end in a draw until the Stingers defensive zone turnover ended up on the stick of Gaels forward Aidan Castle, ArtSci ’29, slipping pass to forward Sam Marburg, ArtSci ’27, who found himself all alone with the Stingers goaltender and fired a shot past him, giving the Gaels a 1-0 lead.

The selflessness of being selfish - The Queen's Journal
The selflessness of being selfish - The Queen's Journal
I learned too late that selflessness can become a slow kind of violence.I used to think love meant shrinking myself and my needs. Disappearing. I made space for everyone else and swallowed my own needs so theirs could breathe. I wore exhaustion like a badge of honour and called it kindness. I said yes when my body begged for rest. I stayed quiet when something hurt and convinced myself that being needed was the same as being valued.
