At its core, conversion therapy practices refer to any actions or "interventions" to change or suppress someone’s sexual orientation, gender identity, and/or gender expression.

The goal is usually to make someone who is gay, lesbian, or bisexual become straight; or to make someone who is transgender or gender diverse conform to the gender they were assigned at birth (cisgender).

These practices are based on the unfounded and incorrect belief that anything outside of being heterosexual and cisgender is wrong; that it can and need to be "fixed" or "cured".

Despite being widely discredited by medical and psychological associations around the world, conversion therapy practices still happen globally.

What are conversion therapy practices?

Sadly, conversion therapy practices are actually on the rise in Malaysia with them being provided by state and non-state actors.

These practices are often disguised or framed as support and guidance, commonly referred to as:

- Mukhayyam, "rehabilitation" camps that claim its LGBTQ+ attendees have been "cured" from their "disease"

- Hijrah, groups of ex-LGBTQ+ persons. The word hijrah also means transitioning into something "better"

- Repentance or kembali ke pangkal jalan (return to the right path)

Does this happen in Malaysia?

Nope! Even using the term conversion "therapy" practices is actually misleading, because they are not a form of therapy.

It suggests that LGBTQ+ people are sick and need to be cured, despite the lack of evidence to support it.

As such, advocates have suggested it to be better referred as "conversion practices" or "sexual orientation, gender identity and/or gender expression change efforts" (SOGIECE).

In actuality, mental health therapy and counselling that are evidence-based aim to affirm and provide healthy support for individuals seeking to explore their sexual orientation or gender identity, whatever the outcome may be.
