Merijaan fights plastic pollution and poverty through upcycling. We are a social start-up that transfers the German bottle deposit system to plastic waste at beaches: We set incentives for people in developing countries like Sri Lanka to collect plastic trash, mostly at beaches, and bring it to our local factories. We upcycle the plastic into new products and sell them at the local market and online. A local added value process, a closed material management and a sustainable product life cycle coupled with a fair and transparent cost structure form our unique selling points. This creates a long-term awareness of the resource plastic and counteracts future (marine) pollution. We start where the state fails, and the competition has no interest in acting: in remote, poorly connected regions without any recycling system to protect humans, the ocean and wildlife.
