Edwardsville Accessibility Update

Below is a guide to the commonly used Green, Yellow, Orange, and Red risk levels. We will include the expected risk level with each protest listed in this linktree.

Protest Risk Levels

🟢 Green – Low Risk
Fully legal, peaceful activities (speeches, marches, teach-ins)
Minimal police presence
Safe for newcomers, and those avoiding legal risk

🟡 Yellow – Elevated Risk
Higher chance of disruptions or confrontations
Increased police monitoring and crowd control
Stay alert, attend with a buddy, know exits, consider protective gear  

🟠 Orange – Moderate-High Risk
Legal but more likely to provoke police response (e.g., outside ICE facilities)
Not recommended for children, pets, or anyone avoiding direct law enforcement interaction

🔴 Red – High Risk
Civil disobedience or illegal actions (e.g., blocking streets, sit-ins)
Strong police response expected, including possible arrest or use of force
Only for participants willing to accept personal and legal risks

ACLU: Know Your Rights — Protests & Demonstrations

Your safety and the safety of our community always comes first. Here are a few quick best practices for showing up prepared and staying grounded:

• Stay Aware
Know your surroundings, and stay close to the group. Use crosswalks, and stay out of the street.

• Don’t Engage
Do not respond to hecklers, aggressive drivers, or anyone trying to provoke you, not verbally, not physically. Your silence protects you and the group.

• De-Escalate by Leaving
If someone becomes confrontational, step back and notify an organizer.

• Respect Local Businesses
Please don’t park in the CVS lot unless you have a valid handicap placard. They’ve asked us to keep that area open for their patrons.

• Keep Walkways Open
Keep paths and sidewalks clear and accessible for everyone.

• Weather Safety
Dress warm, bring hand warmers, and take breaks as needed. If conditions become unsafe, this link will be updated.

• Look Out for Each Other
If someone needs help, walk with them. We move as a community.

About Metro East Mutual Aid:
Metro East Mutual Aid (MEMA) is an all-volunteer network in the Illinois Metro East supporting and strengthening our communities through autonomous organizing, solidarity, and resource sharing.
We take care of each other.

The MEMA Baby Supply has provided baby and menstrual supplies to over 650 families since 2022. MEMA also works with Partners for Pets to offer free pet wellness clinics in Granite City, has helped neighbors with home repairs, transportation, has cards, utility assistance, DACA fees and more. 

Our monthly meeting is this Saturday February 21, at 10am at the Twigs Community Complex, 2101 Cleveland Blvd, Granite City, IL.
