Rickford (1999) Ebonics Controversy: A Linguist's Insight | PDF | Dialect | Cognition
This document summarizes the author's experience with the Ebonics controversy that arose from a school board decision in Oakland, California. The author, a sociolinguist who studied African American Vernacular English, was contacted by the media for commentary as one of the few local experts. Over the next few months, the author fielded many interviews about Ebonics. The author also discusses the Linguistic Society of America passing a resolution supporting the school board's decision, showing more consensus among linguists on language policy issues than expected.
