𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗟𝗲𝗳𝘁 𝗠𝗲 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗱 I interviewed for a Flutter Developer position last month. Everything was going smooth until suddenly the interviewer asked: "𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗮 𝘁𝗮𝘀𝗸 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗮 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝘁𝗯𝗼𝘁, 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼 𝗶𝘁? 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗶𝘁 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲?" For a second, I was speechless. I was like: I had applied for a Flutter Developer role, not an AI Engineer role. How was this question even relevant? Khair...I replied politely: "𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗮 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗲, 𝗜 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵, 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻. 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗲𝗱, 𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲." The interviewer smiled and said: "𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸." So I added: "𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗸 𝗵𝗮! 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗺𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗜 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗮 𝘁𝗮𝘀𝗸 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗜 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺. 𝗠𝘆 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗙𝗹𝘂𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁." 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗺𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁:  • If companies want delivery, they should ask questions aligned with the role.  • Everyone is open to learning, but interviews should test the skills for the job being filled.  • Asking out-of-domain questions is not always a fair way to judge a candidate’s potential. 90% of people fail on Upwork! No, it’s not because they lack skill. I have seen it, and lived it too. You spend hours writing proposals. You refresh the page again and again. You compete with hundreds of others, and still get ignored. Even the most talented professionals quit because: - They chase the wrong clients - They look and sound like everyone else - They get crushed by rejection and lose motivation - They sell hours instead of building real client relationships Here’s the ugly truth: Upwork doesn’t reward the most talented. It rewards the most strategic. The ones who win don’t just have skills. They know where the money is, who the right clients are, and how to stand out in a crowded place. If you are tired of being ghosted and want to finally build a stable income, stop thinking like a job-seeker. Start thinking like a business owner.
