Frontend architecture decisions don't break immediately. They break at 18 months. I've watched this pattern repeat across multiple teams. Month 1-6: Everything works. Team is small. Context is shared. Velocity is high. Month 6-12: New engineers join. They copy existing patterns without understanding why. Small inconsistencies start multiplying. Month 12-18: Someone asks "why do we have three different ways to handle API errors?" Nobody remembers. The person who made those calls left 4 months ago. Month 18+: Every feature estimate now includes "...but it depends on which part of the app we're touching." The decision that caused this wasn't a bad decision. It was a decision that was never written down. No ADR. No README explaining the reasoning. Just code that worked at the time. For engineering leaders reading this: The documentation tax feels expensive today. You're busy. The team is shipping. Writing things down slows you down. But the re-architecture tax at 18 months is 10x worse. I've been on both sides of this. The second time around, I started documenting decisions early. It changed how new engineers ramped up. It changed how we estimated work. What's your approach to capturing architecture decisions before the original context disappears?

Unpopular opinion (apparently): .NET devs who genuinely value OSS, simplicity, and minimal corporate nonsense are a minority in the .NET ecosystem. I say this as someone who’s been around since 2004. I understand the legacy. I lived through it. I even survived it. But at some point… can we move on? Too much modern .NET code still feels like it was designed in 2009, just with newer keywords and a fancier DI container. Endless abstractions, framework worship, ceremony over clarity. More patterns than problems. What honestly makes me sad is this: if you want sane defaults, low-BS development, and tools that don’t assume an enterprise committee per line of code, the most realistic option often seems to be… switching ecosystems entirely. Go. Rust. Pick your flavor of “less nonsense.” Not because .NET can’t do it. But because too many .NET devs won’t let it. The platform evolved. The language evolved. The runtime evolved. Some of the mindset didn’t. And no, adding one more layer, interface, or “enterprise-grade” framework is not progress. This is my last shout-out of the year. Next one will be next year, something more creative, less ranty… probably still inconvenient for someone. 🔥🎅

🏗️ The best senior engineers know when NOT to build for the future. I've seen the posts: juniors focus on style, mids on structure, seniors on extensibility and abstractions. "How will this work when we need to add X?" they ask sagely in code reviews. But here's what's missing from this narrative: sometimes "we'll need X" means mid-2061 when Halley's comet returns. Yes, I've been that engineer. I wanted my code to be elegant, configuration-driven, infinitely extensible. I'd spend days crafting the perfect abstraction for scenarios that existed only in my imagination. Then I learned the expensive way: premature abstraction is just as costly as technical debt. I still fall into that trap today, but I remind myself that the cost of refactoring later is often less than the cost of maintaining unnecessary complexity now. My code reviews emphasize this principle too. When a senior tells a junior their integration needs to support 10 more sources, the real senior move isn't knowing it needs that flexibility. It's knowing whether those 10 sources are needed: Today? Build it now. Next quarter? Make it feasible to extend. When pigs fly? Ship the simple version. The actual differentiator isn't spotting missing abstractions or wrong structures. It's understanding the business context deeply enough to anticipate real future needs, not hypothetical ones. It's knowing when that beautiful, extensible architecture is worth the investment, and when it's just expensive fortune-telling. The best seniors don't just ask "what if we need X?" They ask "what's the probability we need X, when, and what's the cost of adding it later versus now?" That's not as catchy as "seniors think about abstractions," but it's what actually ships products that matter.

Most developers use HttpClient correctly in .NET, but many don’t realize the hidden pitfalls. Let’s clear it up: ❌ The “new HttpClient()” each time If you create a new HttpClient instance every time, you’re not just being inefficient—you’re creating a resource leak. • Each instance opens its own socket. • Sockets don’t close immediately; they linger in TIME_WAIT. • Result? Socket exhaustion → your app suddenly can’t make outgoing requests anymore. ❌ “Singleton HttpClient” problem The next instinct: make HttpClient a singleton - reuse, efficiency, no socket exhaustion. But here comes another issue: • HttpClient holds connections open. • If DNS changes (eg IP changes), your singleton won’t pick it up. • You end up talking to the wrong server until your app restarts. ✅ The right approach: IHttpClientFactory Introduced in .NET Core, IHttpClientFactory is the built-in way to manage this correctly. • It pools underlying HttpMessageHandler instances (the heavy part that manages sockets). • It creates lightweight HttpClient wrappers on demand. • You get the efficiency of reuse and the flexibility of correct DNS handling. Rule of thumb: • Don’t new up HttpClient per request. • Don’t stick with a raw singleton. • Use HttpClientFactory (named/typed clients) for scalable, reliable, modern apps. #ADRs (Architecture decision record) are like event sourcing. ADRs are written down decisions about architecture. Why did you chose React? Why not Angular? What were the Pro and Cons and why was that solution the winner? They make it easy for developers new to the company or new to the team to understand the decisions BEHIND the current tech stack and architecture. So they can make better decisions themselves. A side effect of ADRs is that you do not have the same discussion over and over again. How are they like Event Sourcing? ADRs have not the downside of normal documentation. Normal documentation is hard to keep in sync with reality. It's a tedious process, and nearly impossible if you did not find the right level of documentation (deep enough, but not too deep). ADRs do not change. They are write-one-read-often, they are read only. They don't need to be maintained, they are always correct. In this way they are like events in Event Sourcing. Those also do not change. And ADRs can be seen as an event, and to get an understanding of the current state of your architecture, you need to read and aggregate those ADRs, just like events in event sourcing. https://adr.github.io/
