“During the time I've had the pleasure of knowing Giri, both in academic and professional capacities, he's always subverted expectations. Giri's unreserved nature and genuine interest to teach and spread scientific information was a breath of fresh air to me. To me, he has been a mentor first and only then a research guide or a boss. The several opportunities that he encouraged me to pursue, even when I felt I wasn't up to it, have gotten me where I am now and for that, I'm immensely grateful to him. Giri's relaxed management style is one of his major highlights - he neither indulges in micro-managing and nor is he completely aloof. He understands your potential and gives you the slightest nudge in the right direction, letting you explore various paths towards your professional goals. All this aside, what truly sets Giri apart is how receptive he is to learning and unlearning things to keep up with the latest scientific advances in his many fields of interest. He surely has in many pots and wears many hats very elegantly. This incredible capacity for multitasking is something he inspires in everyone he works with. Needless to say, Giri's finesse commands my highest recommendations and I genuinely believe that any team or organisation would be beyond lucky to have him on board with them!”

Insect Olfactory System as the Target for Computer-Aided Design of Mosquito Repellents

There is a compelling need for new drugs and efficient treatments against mosquito-borne diseases. Environmentally safe, but effective insecticides that address the problems of resistance are required. Computational Design of Chemicals for the Control of Mosquitoes and Their Diseases explains how the search for new substances effective against mosquitoes and their diseases has benefited from the use of in silico techniques. QSAR modeling is suited to identify the key structural features and/or physicochemical properties explaining an activity and to propose candidate molecules for further evaluation by laboratory tests. Homology modeling is useful to approximate the 3D structure of proteins of interest. Pharmacophore modeling is a powerful means to capture the chemical features responsible for an activity and to identify new potentially active compounds via the virtual screening of databases. Fugacity modeling and a wealth of other modeling paradigms are useful for risk assessment in vector borne disease control.
