Members of the Leather Working Group team are currently in Brazil conducting further pilot tests as we refine the draft version of our soon to be updated audit standards. These pilots are a critical final piece of the jigsaw as we transition from the Protocol 7 standard into what will be known as the LWG Sustainability System; they allow us to gather real-world feedback from tanneries and fine-tune the requirements ahead of publication later this year. We’ll be sharing more from the team in Brazil soon, along with further details about what’s coming next... Following India International Leather Fair in Chennai, members of the Leather Working Group team are busy conducting a pilot testing phase of the update to the LWG Standards at a few selected tanneries across Tamil Nadu. The pilot testing programme, currently taking place in tanneries around the world, allows our teams and LWG Assurance Services to learn how the new standards work in real-world conditions – and take on direct feedback from tanners on the ground. We look forward to publishing the LWG Sustainability System later this year with input from the pilot tests, and sharing more with you about that work as it happens. #india #tannery #leather

“We must not do this as a tickbox exercise.” Yesterday in Chennai, India, LWG Executive Director Vanessa Podmore spoke at the LERIG Conclave 2026, organised by CSIR-CLRI (Central Leather Research Institute). Speaking to the Indian leather industry, she shared her perspectives on how sustainability expectations across the leather sector continue to evolve. Her remarks highlighted the growing importance of credible data, traceability, and evidence-based claims, and the need to embed sustainability into everyday operations rather than treating it as a compliance exercise. #india #leather #iilf
