Pixel art sprite editor

LibreSprite is a free program that provides tools for creating and animating 2D pixel graphics. Based on Aseprite, it offers a drawing workspace, color palette controls, and timeline-based animation tools that support multi-frame sprite development. The interface includes layer management, transparency handling, and grid alignment.

You can organize artwork through layers and frames while adjusting individual pixel elements with precision tools. Animation playback tools show frame sequences directly in the workspace. The program can import and export common image formats and sprite sheet layouts. LibreSprite uses community-developed features and maintains open-source development under the GNU General Public License Version 2.

Master pixel animation

LibreSprite organizes drawings through layered image structures, allowing separate visual components to be isolated and adjusted independently. The layer panel supports adding, removing, hiding, and rearranging multiple elements without altering others. Frame controls allow sprites to include multiple animation states arranged on a timeline. Pixel edits can be applied per frame to build sequential movement. Onion skin tools display ghosted versions of previous and next frames for reference during animation adjustments.

The software provides pixel-level drawing tools, including pencil, eraser, fill, line, and shape instruments. Color selection uses palette-based controls to create, modify, and organize swatches. The palette editor supports importing existing color tables or generating new ones for specific art styles. Dithering and shading can be performed manually at the pixel level. Transparency can be applied per pixel or per layer. Grid overlays assist with alignment, spacing, and consistent proportional shapes.

It supports output to single-image formats as well as sprite sheets and animated formats. Individual frames can be exported as standalone images for external processing. Animated GIF output allows playback previews to translate into external displays. However, it’s limited to pixel-scale artwork. The timeline panel interacts directly with export tools so that animations correspond to displayed sequences. File project formats preserve layers, frames, and palette data for continued editing across sessions.

Open source sprites

LibreSprite includes pixel-based drawing controls, layered sprite management, and frame-based animation tools. The software structures graphics through layers and timelines, supports direct pixel editing, and outputs to multiple image and animation formats. It operates with community-driven development and open-source distribution. However, it’s limited to pixel-scale artwork. Its feature set is concentrated on sprite creation, palette control, and sprite sheet export rather than broad digital art workflows.
