🚀 China, ASEAN & The Future of Business – Lessons from Tsinghua 🌏 Just got back from an incredible week at Tsinghua University with NTU-PACE, diving deep into China’s innovation ecosystem with top of class Chinese lecturers and companies visits. It’s one thing to read about how fast China moves, but experiencing it firsthand? Mind-blowing. Since we receive a lot of inquiries every month and are supporting many companies at Smart Start Japan, it really made me think about the concept of a “Japan tax.” I want this LinkedIn post to mark me officially joining the conversation around the term “Japan tax” and helping turn it into an actual word people use to describe the experience of living in Japan. A “Japan tax” is a non-governmental tax that foreign residents inadvertently pay simply by living in Japan. What I mean is this: many foreigners living in Japan are either earning less in salary than they would overseas, or they are earning enough to live comfortably in Japan but not enough to build sufficient savings to move back to the US or another expensive Western country. A foreigner may also not be developing their career and skills at the same pace they would if they had continued living in the US, for example. In the case of an English teacher, even if you are very talented, you can start to experience diminishing returns on your investment after 12 months if you adapt quickly, or after 24 to 36 months if you progress more gradually. Additionally, in terms of marketing techniques, knowledge, know-how, and software proficiency, I find that many of my foreign friends and clients in Japan are usually one to two years behind some of my market-entry clients from the United States. I would include myself in that category at times as well perhaps three months behind in AI and six months behind in marketing trends. For me, the sweet spot is being an early adopter rather than an initial adopter, especially considering my limited team size of four people. However, I feel if I was in the US, I would probably be surrounded by more people who are cutting edge / innovators / growth hackers and probably be learning skills and techniques more quickly. at the same time I like how it's less competitive in Japan and I feel less pressure to always be pushing the boundaries. Also another form of Japan tax is if you want to get a business manager visa now there are people who now need ¥30 million to get that visa and hire a Japanese employee just because you want to live in Japan and some people are even going as far as paying a company over ¥100,000 a month to hire them as an employee and often times even higher just to get a work visa on paper and live and bring their family over to Japan. I will make a follow up post on the Japan tax and talk a bit more about why these foreigners are moving over to Japan.
