Script To Screen Evaluation

Image
Recreating a scene from a film is a challenging but exciting experience that required a great deal of preparation and, for me, not a lot of outcome of satisfaction due to my lesser amount of work so I could work on my mental health. For fourteen weeks, I have been more in the background for this production whilst I work on my priorities, my stances as a television maker and I have been generously given the opportunity to create a 30-minute chat show with the second year's, meaning I have struggled a bit managing the production of creating a scene from John Wick as the forefront project. This unit was meant to be all about growing and learning more creatively, and in the end it was about finding my place out of a dark tunnel. After we had decided on a scene to recreate, the first step was to analyse the product and understand the characters, their motivations, and the overall tone of the scene. I had a look through the original script around 3-4 times to try and get a grasp for it, ...

Critical Understanding Of Drama Productions

Image
As my understanding of the film John Wick is very little to none essentially, I decided that it would be best to contribute some form of planning document by creating a floor plan for this scene from Doctor Who, and I quickly realised whilst I believe the tone is similar and the scene is simple with heavy dialogue emphasis, there are still over 15 angles used within this piece of work. Here is the floorboard that I made. I decided against animating it, however, due to the amount of times static cameras slightly adjust and change and the scene is around five minutes long. The red squares with triangles are the cameras and the green dots are the actors on screen. The scene is a perfect metaphor for conflict and the damage that that causes in the real world. The angles used show opposition and struggles with close facial expressions which make for a very interesting and long dialogue scene. What I personally really like is the way in which we get to see movement happen from the char...

Group Presentation

Image
This is my part of what I had originally planned to contribute to the project's pre-production phase as well as my intent with production. Unfortunately, none of the envisionings that I had came to fruition in production, however, the majority of my pre-production work did go ahead. The intent here was to not recreate the scene but to reinterpret it. My plan was to adapt the scene from words instead of watching a scene and basing it on that. The idea behind doing it this way came from my personal distaste of movies and not having seen John Wick before. However, I didn't want to completely divulge from the original source material, as the second point says. In my eyes, it's about familiarity mixed with distinction to create that perfect blend of originality. I am also a big believer in the concept that not every idea has been created and there is still room for new innovation, which is exactly the idea that I had within my head from start to finish. The next one comes from...

Case Study: Julie Gardner

Image
Julie Gardner was an executive producer on Doctor Who between 2005 and 2010 on their respective air dates. This journey lasted across two doctors Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant and she will be returning to the same role for 2023's Doctor Who and beyond. She is also the co-founder of Bad Wolf Studios with fellow executive producer Jane Tranter which creates high-end drama for a global audience, including His Dark Materials and A Discovery of Witches. Nobody can comprehend the amount of hard work and graft that was put into the working of creating a drama empire within the BBC during the early 2000s, having to think about the government's positional, and financial difficulties and a lot of changes to the way BBC controls their output, it was an uphill battle from the start. The limited budget, the pessimistic image of the Doctor Who brand and the indescribable pressure from fans to bring the said brand back into popular culture, significantly when that responsibility fel...

Foley Workshop

Image
This isn't the first time I have been asked to create a change of ambience and feel utilising foley and colour changes. This was fairly good though, I utilised four audio layers for the happier upbeat footage and five layers for the more doom-and-gloom footage. This contrast of effects in how the sound is made and utilised allows me to give distinctive feelings through audio alone which proved the vitality of audio as a primary component to making a film.

Expressive Lighting

Image
Below is a list of some of the techniques used for lighting and how they each differently affect the image and scene for different effects and feelings Chiaroscuro - Overcoming the lighting differences with a lack of contrast. Key Light - Most Important light, the main focus of the scene is likely to be lit this way. Fill Light - Opposite of Key Light, adding additional depth to the scene and the focus gets more mood. Back Light - Separates subject from background, my favourite lighting effect. Hard Lighting - Harsh Soft Lighting - Fluorescent/Blurry Naturalism Pictorialism   Subtractive + Additive Shot Recreation: (Inspiration) Film Noir: Book Lighting: Overall, the workshop was a positive and enriching experience where I learnt a new appreciation for colour and the feelings they empower. I feel as though I can effectively utilise this in my practical work going forward and expand the feelings that can come out of angry reds, bright yellows and mellow blues. I also felt like ...

Lighting Workshop

Q Cabs: Q uality C olour A ngle B rightness S hape Key Kelvins: Warm - 3200k Daylight - 5200k I really enjoyed this workshop, working with Sam on the different effects that lighting could have on different projects and how the lighting can affect the camera as well, finding that fine balance between light and camera for the ideal and most natural-looking shot. In fact, I was able to utilise my brand new understanding of the Kelvin meter by utilising those skills in third-year Anna's project. Where I balanced the white balance with the purple hue so it looked dark and mysterious whilst also not looking completely unnatural and off putting.
