The Tears of Things
This marks the beginning of my experiment in writing a weekly newsletter of original poetry and prose, quotes and reading recommendations. My goal is to share what I find meaningful in life as the world becomes darker around us and as we charge forward into the final hours of human history.
While I am studying Buddhism, Christian Mysticism, Neoplatonism and similar belief systems, my goal is not to try to proselytize any of these. I only hope to use this ancient wisdom as inspiration for expression which might inspire others as well.
The new title for my newsletter is inspired by my favorite Bible verse:
“Now when He was asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, He answered them and said, “The kingdom of God does not come with observation; nor will they say, ‘See here!’ or ‘See there!’ For indeed, the kingdom of God is within you.”
—Luke 17:20, 21
I hope you enjoy what I’ve compiled for this week.
Interbeing
All I need are three things: to be still, know, and look deeply. This holy trinity makes one flower into the whole of the universe; it turns suffering into liberation and pain into bliss.
“The flower is made of non-flower elements. If we look deeply into the flower, we see the sun, the clouds, the earth, and everything else in the cosmos.”
—Thich Nhat Hanh
Kenotic Hymn
Our end was written in our beginning, A pillar of fire, a snake swallowing its tail: The sacred dance must go on. Destruction may leave us glowing, But division will only fill us With darkness. When I am empty, then I am full. Make me a servant, let me Kneel in the ashes for the rest of my life. Wherever your blistered feet pause, There is the meeting place Of all things.
“Wherever you stand, be the soul of that place.”
—Rumi
“The Kingdom of God is spread out upon the earth, and men do not see it.”
—The Gospel of Thomas
Nihilism
In the last 5 years I've found that the antidote to nihilism is to pass through all the stages of grief: that old reflection of love. The final stage of grief can look like nihilism from afar. The difference is, one leaves you with something, the other leaves you with less than nothing.
Lacrimae Rerum
The whole of the cosmos could fit inside a single teardrop: the tear of a mother. And we are all mothers of the world after all. All life arises only to perish; all societies eventually die. I think karma means universal justice. We shall dance in the warm glow of the awful grace of God. Blessed are those who weep; I am comforted by my tears. There is beauty and peace in sorrow. It is harder to do evil when you're doubled over in grief.
“Grief is not a disorder, a disease, or a sign of weakness. It is an emotional, physical and spiritual necessity, the price you pay for love.”
—Earl Grollman
“He who learns must suffer. And even in our sleep pain that cannot forget falls drop by drop upon the heart, and in our own despair, against our will, comes wisdom to us by the awful grace of God.”
—Aeschylus
Wishing you a beautiful and enjoyable weekend.
