Hi all, it is Leracia! This year has been pretty rough with suddenly losing Basil due to a sudden medical emergency. Now I am faced with a very similar situation.
In April 2025, I independently rescued Merida and Maudie from horrible conditions. Maudie had a long history of respiratory issues and passed away in September.
Merida got to enjoy the comfort of finding a home, love, and a bunny family. She finally had her first Christmas.
On the evening of 01/02/2026, Merida developed an acute onset of discomfort. She was medically managed at home, but her symptoms did not improve. She was taken to Colorado State University for what we thought would be routine GI stasis protocol.
Her liver values, unfortunately, are highly indicative of a spontaneous liver lobe torsion, which is where the lobes of the liver turn on themselves, cutting off blood supply.
There are 2 options she may be facing. One would be to try to medically manage her symptoms in hopes of the issue resolving itself. There is always a chance that the liver will twist again. This quote to medically manage her symptoms is over $6k.
The other alternative is she may need emergency surgery, which has its own risks. A liver lobe torsion surgery is extensive and comes with risks. The surgery can range up to 10k.
Right now, Merida is being hospitalized overnight to undergo an ultrasound to get a better idea of what is going on. We are currently at 2k in vet bills.
Merida does have insurance, but it only covers up to 3k with 70% reimbursement.
I have done a lot of rescue work and helped raise funds to help rescue rabbits receive life-saving care. Please help return the favor to help me save Merida's life.
