Crypto Questions

Cryptocurrency, also known as Virtual Currency or "Crypto," is a digital asset designed to function as an alternative to sovereign fiat currency (US Dollars, for example) whereby transactions between two parties are verified through a public, distributed ledger, also known as a blockchain. Most people think of Bitcoin and/or Ether when they hear the word "Crypto," and while Bitcoin is the original cryptocurrency and most widely followed, there are a number of cryptocurrencies currently available.

The Engiven platform is a highly trusted third-party vendor provided donation software technology that enables nonprofits to safely and securely receive cryptocurrency donations and then convert those donations into usable fiat currency such as US dollars. Learn more about Engiven here.

Yes. It is lawful for a nonprofit to accept a donation in the form of a cryptocurrency. On March 2014, the United States Internal Revenue Service (IRS) ruled that Bitcoin is treated as property for tax purposes (IRS Notice 2014-21).

For U.S. tax purposes, transactions using virtual currency must be reported in U.S. dollars. Therefore, taxpayers will be required to determine the fair market value of virtual currency in U.S. dollars as of the date of donation. If a virtual currency is listed on an exchange and the exchange rate is established by market supply and demand, the fair market value of the virtual currency is determined by converting the virtual currency into U.S. dollars (or into another real currency which in turn can be converted into U.S. dollars) at the exchange rate, in a reasonable manner that is consistently applied. Donors who give cryptocurrency donations to One Collective will receive an electronic donation receipt (through the Engiven donation platform) in US dollars with comprehensive details about each transaction.

Is the process of giving cryptocurrency safe and secure?

As with any form of electronic payment or transaction, there are risks, however, our vendor Engiven has created certain safeguards they believe are needed to ensure that the transaction is secure. With the transfer of cryptocurrency from donor to nonprofit, Engiven believes the transaction can actually be more secure than many other forms of payment, provided certain protocols are followed: 1) By using the Engiven platform, both the nonprofit and the donor are required to undergo a simple but effective Know Your Customer (KYC) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) screening which provides a high level of background security to ensure both parties are properly screened. 2) As with any cryptocurrency transaction, when transferring your tokens to One Collective's wallet to make a donation, do not expose or share your wallet's private keys at any time.

What does One Collective believe about giving?

One Collective is funded by the generous financial partnership of individuals, churches, and foundations. As stewards of God's resources, we believe in treating the supporters of this ministry as partners, friends, and team members. We carefully and ethically handle the gifts entrusted to us by maintaining appropriate systems of accountability and by seeking to maximize their intended use. We are a charter member of the ECFA.

In more than 50 communities around the world opportunities exist to support individuals and families serving with One Collective. Donors may support the ministries of One Collective in a variety of ways.

Are my gifts tax deductible?

Generally, yes. Since One Collective is a registered 501(c)(3) charitable organization, your donations to One Collective are tax deductible as allowed by law. However, personal gifts given directly to our field staff are not tax deductible.

Can One Collective accept gifts from outside of the United States?

We are able to receive a gift from anywhere in the world if it is made using a credit card that we accept. However, we can issue a tax receipt for United States tax purposes only.

How can I get more financial information about One Collective?

What about financial accountability?

One Collective is a charter member of the ECFA, and abides by all its strict requirements. An independent certified auditor conducts a full audit of our books every year. An independent Board of Directors conducts a budget approval process and review of finances annually. One Collective complies with all federal, state, and IRS regulations, submitting a 990 form annually. One Collective maintains the highest possible charity ratings with GuideStar and Charity Navigator.

What happens with the financial support that's raised? Where does it go?

Donors make tax-deductible gifts to One Collective for the ministry of One Collective. For long-term and mid-term workers, donations are allocated to the worker in the form of one-time set up costs and a monthly salary. For short-term workers those donations are allocated in the form of a monthly stipend. In conjunction with our HR/Finance Departments, each worker/worker family that serves with One Collective creates an individualized budget that is determined by the location of service, the type of ministry, the housing and transportation needs, etc. of each worker or worker family. Based on this approved budget, the worker receives a salary (stipend if short-term) to cover the aforementioned expenses. A portion (15%) of the financial support that has been donated is allocated to a general ministry fund called the Global Service Fund (GSF). These funds are designed to contribute towards the administration of the global ministries of One Collective. The worker is responsible for raising the full budget amount before leaving for the field. One Collective is a member of the ECFA. In the area of financial integrity, we have diligently worked to obtain the highest ratings available from GuideStar and Charity Navigator so that publicly available information is accurate and transparent about our activities. We are also a charter member of the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability (ECFA). We adhere to the ECFA's Seven Standards of Responsible Stewardship and Donor's Bill of Rights. As a charter member, since 1980 we have upheld these high standards continuously. In addition, each year our Board of Directors reviews the results of our financial statement audit which is performed by an independent auditing firm.
