allow us to backup a directory; we have the database being backed up, but what about local files that are outside version control, like user's mugshots.

allow us to tell it NOT to back up to ebs, even if we have it enabled. It allows one to keep multiple different types of backups, though it is still consolidated around s3.

making the god pinging of the server more helpful and less intensive. web hits the status pages for apache/nginx, and the app one hits each mongrel instance but only once a minute

the new memcache-client now requires rubyinline, but it is not listed as a requirement in the gemspec, so it fails to install but won't pull in the dependency
