  1. don't acquire the lock until threading is decided to be needed 

    right now it's a full bug since it serializes all threads using the library as they hold onto the lock when doing execute(). However since I'm not changing the threadcount after startup I don't need to even acquire the lock unless I'm actaully doing threading.
