Apple Vision Pro: Unlocking the Potential of Spatial Computing & Vision

Image
Introduction I rarely get the chance to work with technologies that fundamentally disrupt the way we work. Right now, I am using two. The first (and most obvious) is a LLM. Large Language Models are more than an AI bot that can understand human language and respond accordingly. They have the potential to change how we use technology. Rather than a GUI with buttons, menus, and a help button that does anything but help, what if you just talked to your computer and told it what you wanted it to help you do? A keyboard is faster than a keyboard and mouse, and voice is faster than either. But that is a different article. Right now, I want to focus on Spatial Computing. In the same way ChatGPT enables an entirely new way to interface with your computer, Spatial Computing allows you to integrate technology into your environment, removing the barrier between screens and real life. While that sounds terrible at first, think about how much time you spend focused on a screen. Doubly so for ...

The Aliens Among Us

Image
Before you ask: No, I don't think the proverbial "Little Green Men" have come.        For the last several years, the US military has observed an increase in what it calls "unexplained aerial phenomena." The rest of us may know them by their more common name - unidentified flying objects - and we should all strive, as the Navy is doing, to take these reports more seriously. Sometimes, according to the Washington Post, well-trained military pilots "claimed to observe small spherical objects flying in formation. Others say they've seen white, Tic Tac-shaped vehicles. Aside from drones, all engines rely on burning fuel to generate power, but these vehicles all had no air intake, no wind and no exhaust." They also appear to exceed all known aircraft in speed and have been described by a former deputy assistant secretary of defense as embodying a "truly radical technology." Meanwhile, Avi Loeb, chair of the Harvard astronomy department, recent...

Linux Foundation Takes on Metaverse, Physical World Mapping Challenges

Image
The Linux Foundation  (LF), one of the primary driving forces behind the continuing growth of open-source technology, is turning its attention to developing a better metaverse and creating a living digital record of the physical world. In December, LF announced the  Open Metaverse Foundation  (OMF) with a mission to provide a collaboration space for diverse industries to work on developing open-source software and standards for an inclusive, global, vendor-neutral, and scalable metaverse. Also in December, LF announced the formation of the Overture Maps Foundation (OMF) to build interoperable Open Map Data that allows developers to build new map services leveraging the combined contributions of Overture members. The LF organization hopes the mapping plans will rally all forces to master the challenge posed by creating a living digital record of the physical world that no single organization can manage. The newly formed OMF within the Linux Foundation will focus on ...

HSBC swoops in to rescue UK arm of Silicon Valley Bank

Image
HSBC has swooped to buy the UK arm of collapsed US Silicon Valley Bank (SVB), bringing relief to UK tech firms who warned they could go bust without help. Customers and businesses who had been unable to withdraw their money will now be able to access it as normal. The government and the Bank of England led the talks and worked through the night to scramble together the deal, which involves no taxpayer money. HSBC said it paid just £1 for the SVB's UK arm. Speaking to the BBC, HSBC boss Noel Quinn said the deal had been "too good an opportunity to miss" and had ensured "a crisis in one institution did not become a systemic crisis". Silicon Valley Bank - which specialised in lending to technology companies - was shut down by US regulators on Friday in what was the largest failure of a US bank since 2008. Its collapse sent shockwaves across the tech industry over the possible impact it could have on businesses, with some firms telling the BBC they could go bu...
