Just finished this concept art of Avon for Aniima: The Dawnfall by @fmn-studio. ✨

Avon the axolotl plays on the "mute" protagonist trope, but his personality and choices shine through the game's story and are at the center of everything that happens, even though it might not seem like it at first sight. 🪷

I can't wait to share more art of him while working on the game!

February 2025 Update

Coding

  • Integration of a loot system.
  • Integration of Dash, Roll, and Light abilities.
  • You can now unlock items after collecting them by fighting enemies.
  • Beginning of integration of a loot system.
  • Tests for lights and layers’ priorities.
  • Implementing a parade system to counter and stun enemies’ attacks.

Concept Art

  • Aside from the final boss, all enemies have been rendered in digital art.
  • We only miss three monsters, which are in black and white.
  • The first monster sprite (Sap Slime) is done.
  • The next goal for March 2025 is to finish all the enemies and finalize Avon and Niima’s designs.

Narrative Elements

  • Revamp of the scenario so it has two villages instead of one.
  • 8 main quests and 26 sub-quests.
  • Design of the complete encyclopedia (fishes, insects, animals, critters, natural resources, monsters), aside from the flavor text.
  • Design of all tools, crafting, and cooking systems.
  • Brainstormed some mini-games for the demo.
  • The next goal for March 2025 is to finish some of the flavor text.


January 2025 Update

Coding

  • Remaster of the gravity for the Sprite and implementation of a new camera for a refined 2.5D look;
  • Function hierarchy was rehauled;
  • The pipeline for the creation of new elements was optimized;
  • The “unlock” function for abilities, powers, and weapons is now integrated into the game;
  • The next goals for February 2025 are integrating menus and the first sprite sheet test.


Concept Art

  • Halfway through the notes, concept arts and turnarounds for all the demo’s enemies;
  • Halfway through the final character designs (sketch) for the NPCs of the first village of the demo;
  • The next goals for February 2025 are to finish the concept art for the enemies, and the sketches for the character designs for the NPCs in the first village.


Narrative Elements

  • The scenario for the demo is entirely done;
  • The main questline and all the sub-questlines, with quest givers, goals, rewards, and unlocks, are designed;
  • All NPCs, enemies, animals, fishes, insects, critters, crops, loots, recipes, craftables, tools, and materials for the demo have been determined, and all have a purpose;
  • The rough sketches of the first region’s map and two villages are done;
  • The next goal for February 2025 is to finish some of the flavor text for the elements of the game.

One year of game development for Aniima - The Dawnfall.

We still can’t believe how much we learned in only a year. The basic game mechanics are almost done. We are currently cleaning the code, implanting the UI, and working on the final characters’ design for the demo.

Storywise, Chapter One’s scenario is completed. Starting 2024, we’ll be able to implement our own assets, a bit of sound design, and dialogues.
