Emma Hynes is a writer, singer, musician and visual artist from Dublin, Ireland, performing her own songs, prose and poetry.

Her 2025 releases, Hinterland and Sierra, and 2026 single Tell Me How, soon to be followed by Experimenting Saturday on 3 April, are from her eagerly-anticipated debut album which will be out this year.

They are preceded by the celebrated Space Between Trilogy, 2021 – 2022.

Emma’s music sees alt, new and indie folk blend with pop, rock and poetic introspection to form something unique, and evocative of what she describes as her “own brand of ethereal longing.”

Her songs have featured on the RTÉ Radio One Recommends list, the Nova Guestlist’s Top 100 Songs of the Year on Radio Nova, in Hot Press Magazine and The GOO, and enjoyed national, international and local airplay.

Emma has played live at venues such as Dublin’s renowned Whelan’s main stage and the Irish Writers Centre, and headlined at The Workmans Club, and the Dublin Quays Festival. As resident performer with the brilliant and tireless Fuzzed Up Record Label and Live Events, she has played several times at The Racket Space in The Bernard Shaw.

The next show there on 5 April sees her headline with a full band to celebrate the release of her next single, Experimenting Saturday. Tickets and details here.

She will also perform an in-store at Volume Books and Records, Dún Laoghaire, at 3pm on Easter Saturday, 4 April as part of launch weekend for the song.

As a published and performing writer, Emma’s work has appeared in The Ogham Stone and Visual Verse: An Anthology of Art and Words which now forms part of a literary archive at Newcastle University’s Centre for the Literary Arts. She has both read and sang at the Irish Writers Centre.

Also a visual artist, Emma’s photography has been shortlisted for the prestigious RHA Annual Exhibition, exhibited on Culture Night, and features on the artwork for all her releases and music videos.

As a first-class honours graduate of literature, drama, film and television, Emma’s love of writing, reading and theatre, combined with her lifelong passion for music, and appreciation of visual art, all make for an interesting combination of poetic lyrics, accomplished melodies, thoughtful performances, and compelling artwork.

Tell Me How – Released 20 February 2026

Emma launched headlong into 2026 with a sense of hope and adventure courtesy of single number three from her forthcoming debut album; the upbeat, determined Tell Me How.

This spirited song salutes the melodious surf pop and rock of the 1970s while retaining its own originality, and firmly belonging in the here and now.

It has received consistent airplay on RTÉ Radio 1, positive reviews in Hot Press and The GOO magazines as well as being added to the Hot Press New Irish Songs To Hear This Week and IMRO New Music playlists.

Initially a digital release, it’s now set to appear on 7 inch vinyl as a Double A-Side with forthcoming single Experimenting Saturday, out 3 April on Fuzzed Up Records.

Hynes’ bold and distinct vocals bring me back to beloved female rockstars of the past such as Susanna Hoffs and Bonnie Raitt.

The song is stuck-in-your-head catchy in the best of ways and has made Hynes upcoming album one of my most anticipated of the year.

– The GOO Magazine

The lyrics are gracefully delivered by Hynes’ deep and captivating vocals, via a flowing, exciting melody, accompanied by hopeful guitar, and a beautiful string arrangement.

Hinterland – Released 7 November 2025

Hinterland is the second single from Emma’s forthcoming debut album.

While possessing a more vulnerable feel than her previous single, Sierra, shades of Irish and Spanish influence and poetic introspection similarly whisper across its landscape, and offer further tonal and thematic hints of the album-to-come.

Hinterland sees Emma take another step forward in a new, exciting and experimental era for both her and her music.

A charming, alternative tune that brings the warmth of the early twentytens’ acoustic pop to mind….the mature female vocals and acoustic guitars offer a deep and warm melancholy vibe with a Spanish flamenco influence. Looking forward to her debut album enormously.

– The GOO Magazine

Emma Hynes is an artist who doesn’t fit neatly into one box, and that’s exactly what makes her music so captivating. [Hinterland is] dreamy, emotional and quietly powerful.

Sierra – Released 20 June 2025

The first single from Emma’s forthcoming debut album, Sierra has its roots in both Ireland and Spain, being inspired in part by meditations and encounters had on a trip to the city of Córdoba, which features on the single artwork. The song was written back home in Dublin and recorded at JAM studios in Kells.

[Sierra] showcases [Emma’s] beautiful voice alongside some stunning orchestral manoevures. A perfect slice of summer pop.

– Billboard with Maeve Quigley, Irish Daily Mail

Bright, hopeful and full of momentum….’Sierra’ embodies a spirit of adventure with the clap of castanets and imaginative lyrics evoking wanderlust and introspection.

The Space Between Trilogy

The Space Between, came out on Friday 1 July 2022, following Sometimes, released in February 2022, and Don’t Forget in May 2021.

The Space Between featured in RTÉ Radio 1’s prestigious recommends list for two consecutive weeks, and has been played on programmes such as the Ronan Collins Show, the John Creedon Show, Late Date and Rising Time. It also received airplay on RTÉ 2XM’s The London Ear, and a number of local stations.

Don’t Forget also enjoyed airplay across Ireland, including on RTÉ 2XM and Radio Nova. It was featured and reviewed by Broadsheet.ie, Indie Buddie and Finbar Hoban Presents, and was included in Golden Plec’s Irish Songs You Need to Hear This Week on release. It also made The Nova Guestlist’s Top 100 Irish Songs of 2021.

Sometimes, described by Broadsheet.ie as like “a lost classic by The Carpenters,” received similar airplay and coverage, and was chosen as The Acoustic Yard Radio Show’s Song of the Week on Blues and Roots Radio.

Emma celebrated the release of all three singles with an intimate night at The Workmans Club, Dublin on Thursday 28 June 2022 where I performed a solo acoustic set of these songs and more, and was joined by three very special guests. Full info here.

In terms of other past performances, my solo act gathered momentum in 2019 with opening slots for Brew in The Workman’s Club, and folk rock two-piece Native Harrow at The Underground Venue. In January 2020, I was the sole support to HAIL THE GHOST on the Whelan’s main stage.

In August 2021, I returned to live performance at SIN É as one of sixteen featured artists at the Dublin Quays Festival. This was followed by a support slot for Dublin power pop band, StereoType at The Grand Social in September.

Writing

As a writer, not just of songs, but of prose and poetry, my work has been published in The Ogham Stone 2020 and Visual Verse: An Anthology of Art and Words, and I have performed readings on several occasions at the Irish Writers Centre. In October 2021, I was shortlisted for the inaugural Visual Verse Writing Prize. In 2024, my Visual Verse works entered a literary archive at Newcastle University’s Centre for the Literary Arts. You can read all about that here.

Visual Art

In 2024, my photography was shortlisted for the prestigous 194th RHA Annual Exhibition. A record-breaking 5,300+ works were submitted via the highly competitive process which saw my artwork make the top 515.

In addition to photographing the cover art for all four singles, I created my own music videos for Sierra, Don’t Forget and Sometimes.

My photography was exhibited in Balbriggan as part of Culture Night 2022, and is also on public display in the town square.

As an ekphrastic writer creating work in response to images, my lockdown project, There Are No Fixed Stars, saw me take 40 photographs within 5kms of home and pen 40 pieces inspired by them across 40 days of consecutive level 5 restrictions. You can find out all about it, see the images, a selection of which are below, and read the pieces here.

In 2021 I published a story and film project derived from my last in-person performance at the Irish Writers Centre in February 2020. You can read the story behind The Lost Words here, and watch the film below.

Performance

Emma Hynes Dublin Quays Festival Poster

After an 18-month hiatus on foot of the COVID-19 pandemic, I was so excited to return to the stage again as part of the fabulous Dublin Quays Festival. The Festival featured an exciting mix of emerging talent and established names performing live over the month of August in four great venues along the banks of Dublin’s River Liffey. My solo set from SIN É can be seen below.

I was also delighted to have been invited to support the brilliant StereoType in front of a live audience at The Grand Social on Friday the 10th of September, and you can see that performance here.

Both events were made possible by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media’s Live Performance Support Scheme.

Taking Cover

While live performances were still an impossibility, I played a number of covers of my favourite songs from home across 2020 and 2021. You can visit my YouTube channel to hear me sing songs by David Bowie, Elliott Smith, Slade, Amy Winehouse, Supergrass, Suede, Dexys Midnight Runners, Manic Street Preachers and more. Blogging

Emma Hynes graduates from DCU with an MA in Film and Television Studies March 2015

You may be surprised to find a large number of Coronation Street related interviews, opinion pieces and reviews on this site, so I thought I’d give a little background to those.

I started populating this website when I entered the second year of my MA in Film and Television Studies with Dublin City University. It was three years after I’d completed my BA (Hons) in Film, Literature and Drama at Dublin Business School, and I thought it would be a good way to get writing about the subjects I was passionate about.

Emma Hynes on Coronation Street

I started with Coronation Street, and by the end of the month was writing for the wonderful Coronation Street Blog with which I have had some invaluable and unforgettable experiences. While there are too many to mention individually here, they have included interviewing the cast and producers, attending exclusive previews, treading both the old and new sets, representing the blog at the UK Blog Awards in London, presenting my research on the show at Regent’s University, London, being interviewed on BBC radio about the programme, and having my work published in Coronation Street Blog: The Book.

In fact, a particularly magical moment was finding my writing on the shelves in the Salford Museum and Art Gallery in Manchester. It was also very fitting that this was on a trip to visit an exhibition dedicated to Corrie’s creator, Tony Warren. As above, you’ll find this site filled with reviews, experiences, interviews, and opinions regarding the programme, so if you’re a fan, I hope you enjoy them.
