About

I write science fiction, fantasy, (and other speculative fiction) under the name E.M. Faulds…

…but you can call me Beth

Hi there! I’ve been writing since I was old enough to hold a pen and make it do what I told it.

I’m neurodivergent, but that’s just one aspect of my life. I grew up in Australia and now call Scotland my home. I’ve been a farmer’s child, a traveller, a martial arts instructor, a computer nerd.

I’ve got plenty of real life stories to tell, but I’ve always had a rich imagination, too.

My Work

British fantasy and science fiction author

I write speculative fiction, including science fiction and fantasy in short stories and books. This includes the genres of science fiction and fantasy, among others. I grew up with SFF and longed to be able to create new worlds for myself.

Novella “Bring Me Home” by E.M. Faulds – out now in Wiz Duos Book 2

As part of the Wiz Duos series, “Bring Me Home” shares a home with the brilliant Juliet Kemp fantasy story “Song, Stone, Scale, Bone”. Launched May 2025, “Bring Me Home” is a near-future story about women making terrible choices in difficult situations, space and the privilege of living on Earth, cults, spies, the question, “what exactly is art?”, and an accidental superpower.

Short stories in magazines, anthologies, and podcasts

I’ve come to love the shorter form of fiction, after years of never imagining I could do it. Now I have several publications in science fiction and fantasy magazines like Strange Horizons, ParSec, and Shoreline of Infinity magazines.

More recently, my work has appeared in PodCastle and The Tiny Bookcase podcasts.

British Fantasy Award winner

My collected short stories, “Under the Moon: Collected Speculative Fiction” features science fiction, fantasy, and a soupçon of horror, all from the perspective of female characters. It won a 2023 British Fantasy Award (BFA) for Best Collection. A story from its pages, “The Amelioration of Existence in Spite of Truth and Reconciliation”, was chosen for the BSFA award-winning Best of British SF 2022 collection from NewCon Press!

More about Under the Moon on this page.

It is currently out of print but will be relaunched in 2025. Follow me on Bluesky for updates on when this will be out.

Longer works

My first book was “Ada King”, a novel about a young woman fighting a totalitarian state in a world overcome with climate change. (I wrote it in 2015, long before the current state of things. And yet somehow, it still works.) It’s also about friendship during difficult times and the gift of believing in yourself.

The SFFH Community

I’m a member of the Glasgow SF Writers’ Circle and have loved finding my people. They’re a lot of help and I wish I’d met them years sooner than I did. Thanks to their gentle encouragement and support, I’ve gone to conventions, met with people in the industry, and had a good old nerdy chat at the bar with many folk.

Together, we launched the Gallus anthology at Worldcon in Glasgow, 2024. I co-edited the stories, alongside Neil Williamson and Brian M. Milton. It’s the second such anthology I have edited with the GSFWC, and it’s a great read, featuring stories from Hal Duncan, Cameron Johnston, Annabel Campbell and loads of other fantastic voices.

I’m also involved with the British Fantasy Society as a committee member. The BFS offers members a great deal of opportunities to connect and meet, promote themselves and find out about the industry. Find out more about this fantastic members’ organisation here.

I go to UK conventions and other events often and try to get involved with the programming where I can. You can perhaps catch me reading a story or discussing a topic on a panel, but almost definitely socialising in the bar.

In 2025, I’m a committee member for the World Fantasy convention in Brighton. It’s shaping up to be a magic event, one not to be missed!

Other things I do

I’m a web designer as my current dayjob, and I’m now offering webinars to help UK writers with websites, teaching them how to save money and improve promoting their books.
