In this episode we paid the first of two visits to the fabulous Fantasy Faire, which this year raised an incredible L$30,621,089 (122,484.35 USD) by the end of the Faire!

Now, although the Fairelands themselves have faded back into the Mists, you’ll be able to see them again in this show:

Thanks to our roving videographers, Bain Finch and Chantal Harvey, this week you’ll be able to see the second ten Fairelands: Faireland Junction, Wistlyn Shadows, Ogham Grove, Avalon, Silevea, Thunnus Bay, Lolliocalypse, Growanda, Flamenca, and Duskfall Court. And our roving photographer, Wildstar Beaumont, has captured views of some of the many special events that took place during Fantasy Faire.

The Light of Va’loth

Join Designing Worlds today, Monday 18th March 2024, at 2pm SLT as – in anticipation of Fantasy Faire 2024 – we again look back to some earlier Fantasy Faires, and this week, we’ll be looking back to Fantasy Faire 2019 – already five years ago!

You can see it here on the web, or join our Watch Party in our studio on Garden of Dreams.

DW399 – Fantasy Faire 2019 Part I from Richard Elen on Vimeo.

In this episode we talked to one of the main organisers of the Faire, Elizabeth Tinsley, as well as creators and designers, some of the organisers of events within the Fire, and some of the people behind the scenes who together with vendors and sponsors make up one of the biggest fundraisers in the virtual world, in 2019 raising over $68,000US for the American Cancer Society’s Hope Hostel in Kenya.

And, of course, there is plenty of footage and photos of this years beautiful and stunning regions, filmed by Elrik Merlin, Saffia Widdershins and Beq Janus, and photographed by Wildstar Beaumont.

It’s a stunning show … and another chance to stroll down Memory Lane as we await this year’s Faire – so do join us in the studio, or watch on the web.

On Tuesday 5th March at 1pm, we will be recording a special Memorial episode of Designing Worlds for LaPiscean Liberty, who passed recently.

Lap – as he was known – was a much-loved and important figure in the SL Arts and Machinima worlds. He ran the TV channels, Aview and SL Artists, and was one of the first people to work on ways to bring machinima showings into Second Life. He also ran Festivals such as the 48 Hour Film Festival.

If you would like to come to the recording and learn more about Lap and his work, or if you have stories about Lap to share, please join us in the Designing Worlds studio at 1pm SLT.

Inside our new studio
Inside our studio

Designing Worlds will be returning tomorrow (Monday 5th February) with an all-new show – which we’ll tell you about tomorrow.

But on Tuesday 6th February at 1pm, we’ll be recording a special discussion episode in our studio on Garden of Dreams – and we want YOU to be a part of it.

We’ll have a panel to discuss what AI (or Large Language Models) actually is, how they have appeared in Second Life before, how they might be used by Second Life creators now … and the advantages and disadvantages of the technology. Why are some people so excited? Why are some people so worried?

You can come along and find out from active Second Life creators of many sorts on our panel. We’ll be taking questions and discussion points and information from the audience too – so if you want YOUR voice to be heard, come along to the show.

People will be asked to submit their contribution in chat or on notecards. If you can’t make the filming, contact Saffia Widdershins with your thoughts or questions on a notecard.

The completed show will be shown later in February.

Warning: You may hear the words “hype cycle”.

Please do join us at 1pm in our studio on Garden of Dreams.
