Sewage should not = bonuses for bosses!
The Issue
Life on the Devon coast shapes everything we do. We’re a family of six who spend as much time by — and in — the sea as we can.
That love for the ocean is why we launched Ocean Activist
👉 https://www.oceanactivist.co.uk a mission-led eco beach clothing brand challenging pollution and fast fashion.
The spark came from our son Thomas. At 14 he swam in the sea every month for a year — always in fancy dress — raising money for marine conservation. Watching his determination made us realise we needed to do more ourselves.
But while building Ocean Activist we noticed something worrying.
Too often now, before we swim, we check sewage alerts. We’ve arrived at beaches excited for a family dip, only to see warnings about recent discharges. It changes how you feel about a place you love.
That experience is why we launched this petition, which has now passed 40,000 signatures.
The principle behind it is simple: if environmental standards aren’t being met, executives shouldn’t be receiving bonuses.
The government has introduced new powers intended to block payouts when environmental performance fails. That’s a step forward. But loopholes remain — rewards can still be restructured as retention payments or routed through parent companies.
To the public, that looks like bonuses by another name.
Meanwhile families across the country are still checking sewage alerts before going for a swim.
This campaign is about accountability.
The end goal is clear: close the loopholes and link executive rewards directly to measurable environmental outcomes — cleaner rivers, healthier seas and fewer sewage discharges.
People simply want confidence that the system rewards improvement, not failure.
If you care about protecting the waters we all love, please sign and share the petition. 🌊
Thank you!
