Abstract

Capillary electromigration techniques play a central role in bioanalysis. The full compatibility with aqueous solutions makes the electromigration techniques the best option for analyzing charged and polar compounds in complex matrices. Different mechanisms of separation (or modes of operation) using the same instrumentation but changing the separation medium can be applied to cover a wide range of chemical compounds. Indeed, electromigration techniques can handle from small ionic molecules to macromolecules and biopolymers. Additionally, sample preparation is simplified, and many online preconcentration techniques are available. Also, commercial instrumentation with a high degree of automation is available. This chapter discusses the instrumental aspects and the main modes of separations in capillary electrophoresis and addresses typical bioanalytical applications.
