Preview Film – Thursday March 19th – Sorda – Directed by Eva Libertad

A film not merely about deafness, but about acceptance by society at large and, more intimately, by parents. Angela (Miriam Garlo), a deaf actress portrayed by the director’s sister, lies at the heart of this film through her longing for a child. The conversations shared between them, and with many deaf mothers, gave rise to this deeply personal and intimate work.
Hector (Álvaro Cervantes), Angela’s hearing partner, speaks sign language fluen tly. Yet when Angela becomes pregnant, their tender relationship is tested. Questions surface, doubts linger. What if their child, too, is born deaf?

The film unfolds through a series of striking, carefully observed moments, filmed with quiet mastery from Angela’s perspective: a birthday celebration among deaf friends, and a chaotic childbirth scene in which the piercing beeps of medical machines and the overlapping voices of anxious nurses fade into silence. In doing so, the film invites the viewer to reflect on a fundamental question: how does a society shaped by sound make space for those who live beyond it?
