We just came across some fascinating research on change—and it really made us think. We often treat change as something we either do to 𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐬 (like building new skills or boosting confidence) or to our 𝐣𝐨𝐛𝐬 (taking on new projects, reshuffling roles, bringing in new tech). 𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐜 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐰𝐞 𝐝𝐨 𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐡—𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞? A study from Stanford, Yale and Wharton researchers explored this idea through the lens of a 𝐝𝐮𝐚𝐥-𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐬𝐞𝐭 - the belief that 𝐲𝐨𝐮 can change, and your 𝐣𝐨𝐛 can too. Here’s what they found: 👉 People with a dual-growth mindset saw lasting gains in happiness at work - noticed not just by themselves, but by their peers too. 👉 Those who focused only on personal growth or job redesign saw smaller, short-term improvements. 👉 The big shift came from seeing themselves as active agents of change - able to evolve and reshape their roles meaningfully. This really resonated. Our colleague, @lucyirons said “I’ve definitely had times in my career where I focused on developing myself (taking courses, building skills etc.) but felt frustrated when my role didn’t shift to reflect that growth. And other times, I've taken on new responsibilities without checking in on whether I was evolving personally. We felt compelled to write a book on emotional intelligence and the EQ-i 2.0 model because we had been looking for a support resource for our clients. Nothing we found was practical enough and we were super keen to provide our clients with something they could really use to build their EI. What started out as a series of blogs providing depth to the 15 subscales of the EQ-i 2.0 turned into a full blown book with questions to ask yourself to understand your current capability, stories of our client experiences, and strategies to build your EI.
