Tumultuous waves reminding her
That shifts happen over time
Despite her discontent
Unraveling a whole life
Doesn’t happen overnight

But rather the river falls into her
Weaving through and around
The wounds and disbeliefs
That have bound her
Held her hostage to their brackishness
Begging for breath but finding only complacency
The stench of still water
Pungent in her nose
What if she stops falling
What if she becomes the river

What if she steps out
From the shore which provided
Both safety and stagnancy,
What if the water is deep and cold
And what if she warms it
With her burning for change,
What if she keeps going
Deeper and deeper
Until she’s in over her head,
And despite the filling of her lungs with fear
And the filling of her ears
With cheers to turn around,
What if she doesn’t drown?

And when she chooses
To step out from the dying embers
And into the cool night,
Her feet still carrying
The flames of her captivity,
Will she leave behind
All that has burned her,
Or will she carry a spark,
A reminder of her light

But she can feel its breath
On her cheek
Its arm around her neck
Its hand against her heart
Holding her
Nudging her
Engulfing her senses
So that she doesn’t need to see
Only to feel, trust
Believe
