Welcome to Chess Brothers, we’re a 3-piece blues and roots band based in Newy (Newcastle, NSW).
Band mates from way back, we are each inspired by the legendary R&B music that came out of the Chess Records studios in Chicago. Think of the film Pulp Fiction and you’re in the groove.
We pay homage to many of the original Chess artists like Chuck Berry, Willie Dixon, Howlin Wolf and Little Walter. Our repertoire also features Americana genres with classics from Bob Dylan, Stray Cats, Atlanta Rhythm Section and increasingly, our own original tracks.
If you listen to our studio recordings, you’ll hear the same ‘live sound’ that audiences experience at pubs, clubs and functions. There is very little overdubbing or layering of tracks, so what you see is what you get. We think this is in keeping with the Blues and Roots theme.
We are always interested in playing at new places and look forward to hearing from you.

L to R: Pete Ramsay (drums), Steve Rounsley (vocals and bass) and Ian Taggart (guitar).
